“I Was Poor, But My Dreams Were Rich”

My dreams

By Real life 🧬 stories Published 8 months ago 3 min read

My name is Zulekha. I was born in a small slum where there were no bright streets, and life had no easy paths. My childhood was spent under the shadow of hunger, poverty, and deprivation. We didn’t have a home of our own, and there was never enough food on the table. My mother worked as a seamstress, and I helped her from a young age. Going to school wasn’t even an option—survival always came first.

I used to wonder: is this what life will always be? Will I always live in this cycle of poverty? But deep inside, a tiny spark of hope kept flickering. Every night I told myself, if God gave me a mind, then surely, I could do something. But how? I had no education, no money, and no support.

One day, I visited a relative’s house who had an old smartphone and internet access. That was the first time I saw people running businesses online—selling clothes, handmade crafts, and more. A thought struck me: this could be my way out. I also knew how to sew, and my mother did too. If others could do it, why not us?

I talked to my mother. At first, she refused, saying we couldn’t afford to fail. But I persisted. We had scraps of old fabric at home. I stitched baby dresses and small bedsheets from them. Then I created a free Facebook page—“Zulekha’s Creations.” I uploaded pictures and went to sleep with a prayer in my heart.

For the first few days, no orders came. People just looked, some even mocked me in comments. But I didn’t give up. Every day I made new designs, posted regularly, and asked friends to share the page. After three weeks, I got my first order—for a small baby frock. That day felt like a dream. I stayed up all night stitching it with love and hope in every thread.

Slowly, the orders started increasing. I began using WhatsApp too. One customer referred ten others. People started liking my bedsheets and dresses. My mother joined me fully. I learned how to take online payments, use courier services, and even started professional packaging.

Within a year, I converted one room of our house into a workshop. Today, I have two girls working with me. We ship over 50 orders a week. By the grace of God, I now save thousands of rupees every month. Our home has light, peace, and above all—respect.

People look at me and say, “Zulekha, you’ve done something amazing.” But I say, “The miracle is God’s. He showed me a path of light even in the darkness of poverty.” Now, my mission is to uplift other women like me—to guide, support, and empower them to become self-reliant.

I’m still the same Zulekha—but now I don’t just dream, I live my dreams.
