The algorithmic strategy used by Facebook to suppress rivals and control politics, culture, and personal lives has drawn criticism from many who perceive Facebook as an inevitable supremacy.

Mark Zuckerberg's enterprise has been looking increasingly precarious in recent years as politicians and investors have lost faith in it.

During Facebook's October downtime, the chat and instant messaging app Telegram attracted 70 million new members, setting a new record. It rose from 56th to 5th place in the US app store and became the most downloaded app overall.

Telegram is an IM app with many more uses, including voice calling, file sharing, and general chat functionality.

With over a billion downloads in January 2021, it had more than 500 million active users and was the most downloaded app in the world. The app's secret chat feature encrypts communications from beginning to finish and keeps them locally on users' smartphones.

After being deposed from management of VK, a prominent social media platform he developed as a Russian equivalent of Facebook, by the Kremlin in 2013, fundamentalist libertarian Pavel Durov co-founded Telegram with his brother as an online refuge for free expression.

With the exception of Durov's own money, the app does not have any advertisements or investors.

For a long time, Telegram has been a source of frustration for dictators all around the globe and a tool of resistance.

Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp were blocked by the Belarusian government during the presidential elections, however telegraph was used to disseminate opposition.

Sixty percent of Iran's Internet capacity is devoted to Telegram. Protests against the government were organized and disseminated mostly using the app in 2017 and 2019.

In recent years, Telegram's popularity has skyrocketed throughout Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Although there are no ads, users still pay for it, but it's expensive to sustain so many people.

In an effort to hasten the acceptance of cryptocurrencies, Elias Camper created Telegram with the intention of capitalizing on its massive user base.

The creator, after departing from VK, sought funding in the cryptocurrency market to cover server expenses and launch a new blockchain platform, the Telegram Open Network, often known as town. Unlike traditional cryptocurrency, which processes only about 15 transactions per second, this system claimed to be able to process millions per second.

With 175 backers, Telegram was able to raise $1.7 billion in its initial coin offering, which was the largest in history at the time. But there were warning signs right from the start, including keeping the offering under wraps and not being able to trace the private investors or their sources of funding.

Everything came to a grinding end when the US Securities and Exchange Commission abruptly shut down the crypto network, claiming that it would amount to the distribution of unregistered securities.

Additionally, they said that the majority of the 1.7 billion were allocated towards covering Telegram's expenditures, without any differentiation between the app and its TO network.

Despite Telegram's importance to Pro Democracy demonstrators, few people, particularly in the US, know what it is. Even though Telegram isn't end-to-end encrypted by default, most media still call it an encrypted messaging service, which worries many security experts.

Telegram presents itself as an open corporation that encourages freedom of speech and transparency between users, according to Elieas Camper, director of growth, business, and partnerships.

But as Campo showed, the company's inner circle - composed mostly of Russian developers - regards its CEO as a deity and never dares to challenge him. Campos is getting ready to go from Telegram at the moment.

Finally, Camper dropped a clue that Telegram may eavesdrop on users' private messages.

While doing so on a large scale would be technically challenging, it is possible to disable encryption on certain accounts in the cloud. Ultimately, it's important to exercise caution while using Telegram, despite its marketing claims of being the privacy app.
