The Humble Woodcutter

In ancient Persia, there lived a poor but kind-hearted man named Ali Baba. He made his living by cutting wood in the forest and selling it in the market. Though he had little money, Ali Baba was honest, content, and hardworking. Unlike his wealthy and greedy brother Kasim, Ali Baba lived a simple life with his wife and loyal servant girl, Morgiana.

The Secret of the Cave

One day, while Ali Baba was gathering wood deep in the forest, he heard the sound of galloping horses. Startled, he quickly climbed a tree to hide. From his perch, he saw forty heavily armed men—a group of notorious thieves—stop in front of a giant rock. The leader of the group stood tall and shouted the magic words:

“Open, Sesame!”

To Ali Baba’s astonishment, the rock parted, revealing the entrance to a hidden cave. The thieves went inside, and after some time, came out carrying nothing. The leader then said:

“Close, Sesame!”

And just like that, the rock sealed itself again.

After the thieves rode off, Ali Baba climbed down, approached the rock, and repeated the phrase: “Open, Sesame!” To his amazement, the rock opened again, revealing mountains of gold, silver, and jewels—treasures stolen by the forty thieves over many years. Ali Baba didn’t take much, only a few bags of gold coins. He returned home, intending to use the money wisely.

Kasim's Greed Ends in Tragedy

Ali Baba told his wife the secret, and together they decided to keep it safe. However, word eventually reached his brother, Kasim, who demanded to know the source of the sudden wealth. After learning the magic words, Kasim rushed to the cave. Blinded by greed, he filled bags and bags with treasure. But when he tried to leave, he forgot the magic words. Trapped inside, he panicked.

When the thieves returned and found Kasim in their hideout, they killed him and cut his body into pieces to warn others.

Worried when Kasim didn’t return, Ali Baba went to the cave, found his brother’s body, and brought it home with Morgiana’s help. They gave Kasim a proper burial, and Ali Baba vowed to protect the secret forever.

The Thieves Seek Revenge

The thieves soon realized someone else knew about the cave. Determined to find the intruder, their leader devised a cunning plan. He disguised himself as an oil merchant and visited Ali Baba’s house, bringing forty large oil jars—only one filled with oil. The other thirty-nine jars hid the remaining thieves.

He asked Ali Baba for a place to stay, and Ali Baba, unaware of the trap, welcomed him.

That night, as the thieves waited in the jars, ready to attack, Morgiana overheard strange whispers while fetching oil. Realizing the danger, she acted quickly. Boiling a pot of oil, she poured it into each jar, one by one, killing the hidden thieves. When she reached the last one—the leader—she bided her time.

Morgiana's Clever Trap

Later, Morgiana performed a traditional dance with a dagger for Ali Baba and his guest, the thieves' leader. At just the right moment, she stabbed him in the heart, saving Ali Baba’s life once again. Ali Baba was shocked and grateful. When he learned how Morgiana had discovered the plan and saved the household, he rewarded her with her freedom and treated her as part of the family.

A Secret Passed On

Ali Baba returned to the treasure cave only a few more times, always taking just enough to live comfortably and help those in need. He never used the treasure for selfish purposes. When his son was old enough, he passed on the secret of the cave, along with the lesson that greed destroys, but honor, loyalty, and wisdom lead to true success.
