Why They Made Me Harsh on 'Nigerian Idol' - Seyi Shay Finally Speaks Out.
The singer is spilling it all.

Right now, two of Nigeria's biggest music competitions are concurrently going on - The Voice Nigeria and Nigerian Idol.
While both have been making a lot of noise and are equally quite popular, one particular show has been trending since the first day it premiered because of one of their judges and that show is Nigerian Idol. The judge in question - Nigerian singer/songwriter Seyi Shay.

In her most infamous moment on the show, she told a young aspiring singer on the show that he would never make money being a singer - an act that got a lot of Nigerians riled up and against her. Since then, she has been very outspoken on the show and has had her judging style compared to British X Factor judge, Simon Cowell.
Now, in a new interview with TVC, Seyi Shay is explaining the real reason why she's been so harsh on the show as well as how she's been able to deal with the backlash. Are you ready to hear her side of the story? Then let's go!

During her interview with TVC, the interviewer asked if the personality she expresses on the show is the real her of if she's prompted to do it because the camera is there.
Seyi Shay responded:
Yeah, we're definitely prompted. We all have our little iPad in front of us and so we have the leading sentences, and they are all tailor-made for each person. So you have Sose's name and then you have all his leading sentences. You have Seyi Shay and you have all her leading sentences. Sorry Idol if I'm giving it all out. I don't know if I'm giving away too much.
I think if you're talking about about my personality on the show. I think based on the fact that I'm the only female and female in Nigeria are expected to be a little bit more reserved, laid back and not so honest. So, Nigerian Idol thought it would be really good to make it a controversial series and make the female the most vocal one, which is why I probably really had the most controversial leading sentences, but aside from that also, I'm quite a very honest person. I don't beat around the bush. I think my fans from day one knows that I'm very bold and very honest.
Next, the interviewer asked Seyi how she's been able to deal with the backlash from her appearance on the show to which Seyi responded:
It's nothing because what you have to understand is that, the show is heavily edited. We didn't get into live episode until two days ago. So, we have been filming since January, February and We've auditions thousands of people. We're on set 12hours everyday, at some point if you're getting more than hundred contestants and you're only hearing five good voices, you'll become deaf and angry but the truth is, a lot of my feedback was honest and fair, but the things is when they edit and what you see as the public, is not actually everything I said, so they've taken it out of context for advert, for clips and because we Nigerians we don't do our research, we don't really watch or think about the whole perspective, on what really could have happened, then you find out most people are jumping into conclusion, believing the snippet they see.
So in conclusion, Seyi Shay is saying that while she really is an opinionated person and is very honest, there is also an element of the show that is manufactured to be controversial because Nigerian Idol wanted people talking so that the ratings would go up. Classic reality television. At least, the plan is working and the show is entertaining to watch so good job at doing your work Seyi!
That's All.
