Why Glinda Can’t Do Magic In Wicked

The Wizard And Madame Morrible Must Rely On Glinda Now

By WHB KHNPublished about a year ago 3 min read

The story of Wicked is mostly about magic. The fact that Glinda (Ariana Grande-Butera) cannot use magic, even if she will eventually become Glinda the Good, is all the more fascinating because of this. From an early age, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) demonstrates a profound talent for magic. When the Wicked characters first come to Shiz University years later, Elphaba's emotions cause her to perform a startling magic show that attracts Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh).

Madame Morrible is adamant that Elphaba attend her training session, which she only conducts when a "special" person shows up. Later on, Glinda is also admitted to the seminar, but this isn't because Madame Morrible thinks she has any magical abilities; rather, it's because Elphaba threatened to resign if Glinda wasn't invited. Glinda's future will be altered by Elphaba's choice to resist Madame Morrible and the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum) in the Wicked conclusion, even if Glinda lacks magical talents. The story of Wicked: Part Two will reveal the full scope of these developments.

In Wicked, Glinda hasn't yet mastered magic.

In Wicked, Glinda aspires to be a magician, but she hasn't mastered the art yet. During the "Popular" song, Glinda attempts to use the training wand that Madame Morrible provides her when she accepts her to the training seminar. Glinda tries to summon a ball gown for her roommate as part of her plan to transform Elphaba and make her famous. Although it's a funny scene, Glinda can't perform the magic she wants to.

The majority of Glinda's tale is devoted to her personal development and the evolution of her relationships with Elphaba and Fiyero (played by Jonathan Bailey), rather than to her magical advancements. Because of Elphaba's innate talent for magic, Madame Morrible and the Wizard are solely interested in her and not Glinda. The villains in Wicked only show true interest in Glinda after realizing that Elphaba will never further their agenda.

Unlike Elphaba, Glinda lacks innate magical abilities.

Glinda does not have an inherent talent for magic as Elphaba does. It is explained that Elphaba's unmatched strength comes from being a child of both Earth and Oz when it is revealed in the second act of the Broadway musical Wicked that the Wizard is actually Elphaba's biological father. Elphaba's mother, Melena (Courtney Mae-Briggs), is from Oz, while the Wizard is from Earth. As a result, Elphaba is a child of both worlds, which gives her the unique ability to read the Grimmerie.

Since both of Glinda's parents are from Oz, despite being wealthy Gilliken Country residents, Glinda lacks the enchantment that comes with being a child of two worlds. In addition to possessing natural magical abilities, Elphaba may also use her emotions to channel them. Though she feels things intensely and isn't afraid to express them, Glinda's feelings don't produce magic like Elphaba's did in Wicked.

In Wicked 2, Glinda will acquire magic and transform into Glinda the Good Witch.

She will play Glinda the Good in the sequel, who can travel through a bubble like in The Wizard of Oz, as hinted at in the first scene of Wicked. Glinda is their only choice because Elphaba is now the Wizard and Madame Morrible's opponent, and she is much simpler to control. However, Elphaba is far more powerful than any magical ability she may possess. However, having someone who is shown as magically powerful and the opposite of the demonic Elphaba is appropriate for the Wizard and Madame Morrible.

Glinda's magical powers are not given much attention in the Broadway musical's second act, and it's even hinted that the bubble might simply be one of the Wizard's devices. It's probable that Wicked: Part Two's plot will decide to delve further into Glinda's magical path, given that the first film already made significant alterations, such as Animals helping to raise Elphaba. She will, at the very least, be fully featured in the upcoming Wicked film as Glinda the Good and as the witch to whom the people of Oz turn for guidance following Elphaba's purported death.
