Who Is Stronger - Luffy or Akainu? Monkey D. Luffy vs. Akainu!
Anime!

In the entire world of One Piece, where epic battles and legendary rivalries define the journey, few have captured the imagination of fans like a potential showdown between Monkey D. Luffy and Fleet Admiral Akainu. A very serious and personal conflict has linked them ever since the fateful events of the Marineford War, when Akainu dealt the fatal blow to Luffy's brother, Portgas D. Ace. Now that Luffy's strength has increased manifold, many fans are wondering: will Luffy finally be strong enough to take down Akainu?

Luffy's Strength and Evolution
Luffy has come a long, long way from his early days of being a less than well-known pirate with just a big dream. He had to face plenty of hazardous opponents, make powerful allies, and put himself through many great trainings in order to be the mighty pirate that he is today. The creativity of Luffy during battles is one of his maximum strengths, especially through his signature techniques; his Gears. Luffy overdeveloped his body to learn Gear 2 and Gear 3, later Gear 4, which gave him a variety of powerful forms, each for different combat styles.
The largest jump in Luffy's power was Gear 5, which utilized the Sun God Nika form and unleashed completely new reality-bending powers. The form basically gives Luffy extreme flexibility and unpredictability, making it nearly impossible to counter him directly. With each transformation, he gained strength to equal even the strongest of the world, combined with physical power and speed with mastery of Haki, most especially that of the Conqueror's Haki, which lets him clash with high-level opponents on equal terms. Even his stamina might be improved by the speculated development of Gear 6, let alone new Haki-based techniques that could give him resilience during a clash with Akainu.

Akainu: The Power of Absolute Justice
Sakazuki, more famously known as Akainu, personifies "absolute justice": cold, uncompromising, he considers everything that could undermine order or the stability of the World Government to be eradicated. For this reason, his clashes are normally extremely destructive and merciless; he earned such a terrifying reputation among both pirates and Marines. His Devil Fruit is the Magma-Magma Fruit, Magu Magu no Mi, which allows him to create and control magma. It is immensely destructive and quite powerful on offense.
Akainu's magma powers not only allow him to incinerate his opponents but also give him immense durability and resistance to physical attacks. This magma-based strength makes him unstoppable against almost any opponent, since a few of them can withstand such a torment of heat and crushing impact of his attacks. Akainu is really a formidable opponent in any situation, considering his powers and experience against Luffy's newly gained strength.

How Luffy and Akainu's Powers Compare
But also, considering the level of powers Luffy had against Akainu and their fighting style, theoretically, Gear 5 would give him a range of freedom and flexibility to rival or neutralize these quite direct yet overwhelmingly powerful magma-related attacks from Akainu. What makes Gear 5 so special is the reality-bending nature of it: it gives Luffy an ability not to get hit while delivering unpredictable blows.
However, Akainu's power is based on brute strength and durability that may make him resistant to Luffy's attacks, especially if Luffy cannot maintain Gear 5 form in action for too long. While Luffy has the advantage in agility and creativity, Akainu's endurance and magma abilities would let him survive much of Luffy's attacks, making it a battle of stamina and strategy.
The most important in the case of Haki is the Advanced Conqueror's Haki and Armament Haki, which would assist Luffy in his battle. This would allow Luffy's Haki to bypass some of Akainu's defenses, but he should keep his Haki level strong enough during the fight. As for Akainu himself, since he has purely offensive abilities with strength and experience, this man truly knows how to exploit any kind of weakness, especially against pirates like Luffy.

Who's the stronger of them?
A fight between Luffy and Akainu will be very intense; both will surely go all out. Provided Luffy can maintain his Gear 5 form-or even use Gear 6, if it does exist-he just might be capable of holding a candle to Akainu in terms of durability while dodging his magma-based attacks. His creativeness and resilience give him a fighting chance, especially if he could use his Haki to land critical hits on Akainu.
At this point in the battle, which was really dragging him down, Akainu could get the better of Luffy through relentless attacks and merciless tactics. Of course, Luffy would be very emotionally driven in his desire for revenge against Ace; yet, it would also be important for him not to be reckless and to keep cool.
In the case of Luffy, it is not a matter of strength but a personal issue. The blow of Ace's loss was something that up to this date had never actually been healed. By defeating Akainu, Luffy would feel that he has honored his brother's memory and proved how much he has grown. Protecting the crew, following one's dream to be the Pirate King- every action of Luffy's will shall be seen in this fight resolving protection for the ones he loves.
A Battle of the Ages
Luffy's fight against Akainu would be a battle of wills as much as of strength. Luffy's new possible abilities in Gear 6 would grant him an immense advantage to make him a worthy opponent to face the magma powers of devastation possessed by Akainu. Ultimately, this would be a clash between Luffy's resistance due to freedom and Akainu's unrelenting justice. In the end, it's Luffy's unique fighting style, his adaptability, and his loyalty that may give him an edge in this fight-but only if he can hang in there through the unyielding force of one of the Marine's top fighters.
