What Happens To Dr. Dillamond In Wicked

Will Dr. Dillamond Return In Wicked 2?

In Wicked, Dr. Dillamond plays a significant role in Elphaba's tale. However, what became of him, and will he reappear in the sequel? The goat Dr. Dillamond, who is voiced by Peter Dinklage, is the final Animal teacher at Oz's esteemed university and teaches history to Elphaba and Galinda at Shiz University. In the first Wicked film, he and Elphaba form a bond based on their shared experience of being shunned. However, his character didn't appear in the rest of the movie after Dr. Dillamond was jailed.

Animals are sentient beings with the capacity for speech, education, and community formation in Wicked's Oz universe. Elphaba's tale contains indications that they once held prominent positions in society and even served as the administration and staff of Shiz University. However, as prejudice against animals grows among the Ozark residents, this gradually starts to shift. One of the last people to stay at Shiz was Dr. Dillamond, who sowed the seeds of change among the students by teaching history. Unfortunately, he got into difficulties in Wicked because of this.

Reasons for Dr. Dillamond's Removal and Prohibition from Teaching

Before Wicked, Dr. Dillamond had been aware that something negative was occurring in Oz for a while. Elphaba learned in the film that her history teacher was entertaining Animals at his house, and they would come to express their anxieties about the treatment they were subjected to. A lot of people decided to leave Oz before something horrible happened to them, but Dr. Dillamond seemed intent on staying and trying to alter things. But the goat was caught and removed during one of his courses, allegedly for disseminating information about the silent anti-animal campaign that everyone else appeared to be ignoring.

The instructor who took Dr. Dillamond's place showed the class a baby lion in a cage and explained that the animal would never be able to talk because of the isolation. Elphaba realized what Dr. Dillamond had forewarned her of. Even grownups like Dr. Dillamond were losing their ability to speak because they were afraid of being penalized for voicing their ideas and speaking up, or maybe because of some supernatural force. This process seems to be accelerated by cages.

Elphaba Sees Dr. Dillamond's Destiny

Elphaba had a vision of her favorite instructor imprisoned in a cage following Dr. Dillamond's imprisonment. Since Wicked witnessed Oz hosting a celebration for her (without realizing it was a celebration of her death), she has already verified that Elphaba's visions are true. This vision deeply unsettled Elphaba, who started to feel that speaking with the Wizard was the best way to address this and the overall situation of the Animals. In "Something Bad," she explained to Dr. Dillamond that Oz had a wizard in order to protect the populace from harm.

Naturally, Wicked eventually reveals that the Wizard is the exact cause of Animals' oppression, including that of Dr. Dillaond. This fact was hinted at when Elphaba unintentionally broke the wizard's stone carving that covered the picture of Animals teaching at Shiz. Giving the people of Oz an enemy they thought only he could defend them from was the Wizard's greatest approach to guarantee his desire for control over them. Animals were the ideal scapegoats since they are already so dissimilar from the normal population. The approach included putting people like Dr. Dillamond in cages and silencing them.

How the book Wicked alters Dr. Dillamond's destiny

Although Dr. Dillamond's imprisonment in the Wicked musical and film is a rather horrible fate, it is significantly less harsh than what happened to him in Gregory Maguire's novel. Dr. Dillamond was a science teacher in the original version of the story, and he and Elphaba had been collaborating to demonstrate the biological differences between sentient and non-sentient animals. However, when Dillamond was discovered dead with a cut to his throat, this study was put on hold.

Dr. Dillamond sadly bled to death after falling on a shattered magnifying glass, according to Madam Morrible, who declared his death an accident. Elphaba, however, remained adamant that her companion and teacher had been killed because of their joint research. She persisted and carried on their work covertly and alone. Dr. Dillamond's role was the same even though this is a very different rendition of the plot than the one in the original Wicked film. The activism that would propel Elphaba ahead for the remainder of the novel was greatly influenced by his tragedy.

The Implications of Dr. Dillamond's Termination for Elphaba and Glinda

Elphaba's determination to change was strengthened by Dr. Dillamond's arrest and dismissal. She was even more determined to see the Wizard and seek his assistance, and fortunately for her, the chance to do so soon after. But for Galinda, Dillamond's fate signified something quite different. Although she was empathetic, she didn't think she could solve these issues on her own. However, Galinda changed her name to Glinda in honor of Dillamond, which was a somewhat pointless gesture, in an attempt to win over both Elphaba and Fiyero, who had promptly joined Elphaba in her worry.

Will Dr. Dillamond Return In Wicked 2?

In the first Wicked film, Elphaba thought that speaking with the Wizard would make everything better. She was confident that Oz's leader was unaware of the difficulties the Animals were facing and that Dr. Dillamond would be able to return to Shiz if she informed him. But all of this was banished from her consciousness when she realized that the Wizard was responsible for everything. Although the goat was never mentioned, Elphaba's story will continue to feature him. Unfortunately, when she encounters the unfortunate goat in a cage in Wicked: Part 2, her dream is set to come true.

When Elphaba goes to the Wizard's tower in the second act of the Wicked musical to free the flying monkeys, the man himself confronts her and offers her a seat beside him once more. Elphaba is informed by the Wizard that he is "wonderful" by the people of Oz, and that he must make an effort to live up to expectations. He gave the impression that he would assist her in exchange for her assistance, and Elphaba was almost seduced. But after discovering Dr. Dillamond in a cage, speechless, Elphaba permanently turns against Wicked's Wizard.
