Not Joker, Not Harley—Something New

Why Henchmen Could Be a Fresh Take for DC

Zach Cregger, the writer and director behind the horror hit Barbarian and the upcoming Weapons, has been quietly working on a script for a DC movie that he hopes will one day see the light of day. Now, a new report is giving us a better picture of what this mysterious project actually is—and it’s not what the early rumors suggested.

Not Joker, Not Harley—Something New

For a while, online speculation had pegged Cregger’s DC project as something tied closely to Joker and Harley Quinn. But according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision newsletter, that’s not the case. The movie is called Henchmen, and it focuses on characters who live in the shadows of Gotham’s most famous faces.

Instead of centering on Batman or the Joker, Henchmen follows a low-level criminal who works for Gotham’s bigger villains. Through a bizarre stroke of luck, this ordinary thug manages to incapacitate Batman—a feat that launches him into unexpected fame in the city’s criminal underworld.

Gotham’s Big Names May Still Make Cameos

While Henchmen isn’t built around Batman, Joker, or Harley Quinn, the report notes that these icons could appear in short cameo-like roles. The story is less about superhero showdowns and more about life on the ground level in Gotham: the petty crooks, the street-level schemers, and the people who get caught up in the chaos of larger-than-life battles.

This shift in perspective could make Henchmen feel unique among DC projects. Gotham has always been depicted as a living, breathing ecosystem where not every story has to orbit the same few characters. Cregger’s film would lean into that idea, showing the city through the eyes of someone who usually doesn’t make the headlines.

The Roadblocks Ahead

Of course, writing the script is just one part of the process. Henchmen still faces significant hurdles before it could ever be greenlit.

One major obstacle is casting. DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran haven’t yet chosen who will play Batman, Joker, or Harley Quinn in the DCU. Without those decisions locked in, it’s difficult for a project like Henchmen—which potentially includes all three—to move forward.

There’s also the matter of timing. Gunn and Safran are reportedly “being careful” with Batman-related content while Matt Reeves continues building out The Batman universe with Robert Pattinson. DC likely wants to avoid confusion by keeping those worlds separate and strategically spacing out Batman appearances.

Cregger Knows It’s Not Next in Line

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cregger confirmed the script exists but made it clear that it’s not his immediate priority. His next project is a Resident Evil film, which is expected to put a fresh spin on the long-running video game franchise. After that, he plans to make an original sci-fi movie.

Only then, he says, would he look toward the DC script. “I have Resident Evil, and then I have a sci-fi movie right after that that’s original,” Cregger told THR. “And then I have another finished script that I want to do after that. It actually takes place in the DC Universe, but it’s totally original and it’s not a superhero movie.”

Why Henchmen Could Be a Fresh Take for DC

If it ever gets made, Henchmen could stand out as a grounded, offbeat addition to the DCU—a sort of Better Call Saul for Gotham’s criminal world. By putting the spotlight on someone who isn’t a supervillain or a cape-wearing hero, the movie could explore the strange, often absurd reality of living in a city where every street corner has a story.

It’s also the kind of project that could work within James Gunn’s vision for the DCU. Gunn has a history of taking lesser-known characters—whether it’s Guardians of the Galaxy or The Suicide Squad—and giving them the same emotional weight and humor as the marquee heroes.

For now, though, Henchmen remains an intriguing “what if” in the growing list of potential DC projects. Whether Gotham’s unluckiest lucky criminal ever makes it to the big screen will depend on timing, casting, and whether Gunn and Safran see a place for it in their master plan.
