Villainess Review: Roxy (Totally Studios)

A pair of sisters attempt to prevent their father from marrying a greedy and scheming villainess

Tia Barr as Roxy

Since I started watching the Dhar Mann videos, I've also run into what some viewers call, "the copycats." Among them include Vid Chronicles, Life Lessons with Luis, and Supermission, among many others, but also in that group is Totally Studios. I love all of the names I've mentioned and I watch they daily, but Totally Studios is the subject of this review. I have enjoyed Totally Studios' vids; there's a lot of silliness in them that I just love, as well as the life lessons the videos teach. The collection of female baddies is a small one, but I think the best one from Totally Studios appeared in this short: Kids Get Rid of Evil Stepmom.

The kids in question are Wendy and Emma, and while they were studying, they are approached by Roxy, who is the girlfriend of the girls' father, Duncan. Roxy serves PB&J and refers to it as "home cooking," which tells you all you need to know about Roxy. Needless to say, Wendy and Emma clearly do not like their father's girlfriend, and as we quickly see later on, they have a good reason to have antipathy towards her. As Wendy rushes to search for their favorite game, Jenga, she sees Roxy at Duncan's laptop searching for his bank accounts, doing so while boasting to someone on the phone about coercing Duncan to marry her.

Wendy and Emma's attempts to warn Duncan about Roxy fall on deaf ears, as Duncan voiced his love for Roxy, as well as his guilt about his daughters not having a mother figure, leaving Duncan to believe that he had been neglectful toward the girls. As all four dined, the girls continued to object to Roxy, only for Duncan to suddenly propose to Roxy, who happily accepted. Roxy later asked two things of Duncan: one, a promise to take care of her, and two, assurance that they would be equal partners in everything, with Duncan saying "yes" to both.

Afterwards, we later see Roxy at a café with an unnamed man, with the scene revealing that the pair were colluding to take Duncan's wealth. Roxy boasted that she got into Duncan's bank account, but they needed to wait until she and Duncan were married before robbing him--and it was at that moment that Wendy and Emma arrived and caught their evil (potential) stepmother in the act. However, Roxy countered the girls' threat to tell their father with a threat of her own: she had recorded Duncan stating that he felt that he was neglecting his daughters, and would use it to send the girls to foster care. The girls didn't give up; while they did learn that neglect was the secondary reason why children are sent to foster care, they also found out that Roxy had been tampering with Duncan's memory pills, as the bottle didn't contain the proper medication.

The wedding takes place, with Roxy arriving late, and the couple say their "I do"s even after Wendy and Emma protest. Each half of the couple had their vows recorded, but after Duncan's were played, Roxy's vows were expected, only for a video of Roxy at Duncan's laptop to be shown instead. The video showed Roxy revealing her plans to steal Duncan's retirement fund, and go after the rest once she becomes his wife, but after she was exposed, Roxy claimed that their wedding wasn't a sham, adding that it was just "like the others." Needless to say, Roxy was defeated. Badly.

Roxy displaying her heel persona after accepting Duncan's proposal

Kids Get Rid of Evil Stepmom was released by Totally Studios on October 15, 2021, and the short film featured Tia Barr as the villainess, Roxy. Barr has done a few of Totally Studios' videos before, including playing another stepmother, a neglectful one, in a video released a month prior: Kids Eat Too Much Halloween Candy on a Plane with Stepmom. While Barr's character in that vid was a Designated Villain at best, Roxy was a full-fledged villainess, as she was the mastermind of a sinister plot to rob her potential husband, and was even to have her potential stepdaughters sent to foster care due to being in her way. I truly loved how Roxy's heel persona slowly emerged; she acted sweet-natured at first, even as she is shown to be greedy and scheming early in the film. The café scene that fully solidified Roxy's heel turn was fantastic, as we see Barr act out Roxy's villainous demeanor to perfection.

Tia Barr has a lengthy résumé; the roles may be small, but there are a lot of them, along with the Totally Studios appearances. I am not surprised at how well Barr played her villainous role in this short film. Barr has a "natural heel" look; she has the look to play scheming villainesses to absolute perfection. I hope to see more of Tia Barr in Totally Studios' vids, and maybe some Lifetime movies as well!
