Villainess Review: Rose (Supernatural)

An evil alpha female werewolf orders her pack to cover their tracks in this Season Eleven episode

Suki Kaiser as Rose

Season Eleven of Supernatural had quite a memorable storyline, and that's an understatement. Not only did it kick off what would be the final one-third of the series, but the season's centerpiece was The Darkness, which was released after Sam and Dean actually killed Death in the tenth season finale. Yes, you read that right. The Winchesters actually eliminated Death, and that led to The Darkness being released. So the brothers and their allies had a lot on their plate during the 2015-16 season, which I enjoyed watching every Wednesday night. Even with all of that, as we've seen in every season, we still had the "monster of the week" episodes, with one of them being "Red Meat."

Of course, the title--alone--should tell you what the brothers had to deal with in the episode: werewolves. In this case, the brothers were on the case of a trail of missing hikers up in Idaho, and they figured werewolves were involved because one of the victims was found without a heart. The first part of the episode is told via back-and-forth time jumps, but it's easy to tell in this review. It was Sam's idea to go on this case, because they needed a distraction from the whole "Darkness" problem that they were facing. Their investigation led them to a nearby bar, which was run by a woman named Rose, and the pair asked Rose about a couple who went missing: Michelle and Corbin Tilghman.

Upon being shown the "missing" poster with pictures of the couple, Rose claimed not to have seen or recognized them. However, she would direct Sam and Dean to nearby cabins that were deemed private property, with the boys taking Rose's directions. As we would see, Sam and Dean ended up finding the couple, but also encountered the pair of werewolves who were holding them captive with plans to feast on them. It was a messy encounter; the couple was rescued, the werewolves were killed, but Sam ended up shot and was clinging to life.

After the rescue, the scene shifts back to the cabin, and we see two more werewolves enter. Sure enough, one of the is none other than Rose, who is revealed as the leader of the werewolf pack who had been hunting down victims in the area. As she looked at her fallen packmates, Rose lamented over the fact that she warned them about the Winchesters, stating that she gave them ample time to prepare for them. She ordered her henchman to clean things up before moving on, but first, they hunted for Sam.

It was on the following day that Rose and her right hand man located Sam at a ranger station, where he was still alive but still wounded. Rose sent her henchman after Sam, with the villainess herself following him afterwards. Sam ended up killing the henchman, and as for Rose, she smirked as she tracked Sam into the basement, but unfortunately for her, she met the same demise.

"Red Meat" was the 17th episode of Supernatural's eleventh season, and aired on The CW on March 30, 2016. The episode featured Suki Kaiser as main villainess Rose, and out of Kaiser's villainous roles (that I know of), Rose is my favorite. Even before Rose turned heel, there was a hint of a villainous aura about her. The way she evaded the brothers' questions about the missing couple, as well as her expressions during her introductory scene, pretty much showed that she was quite sinister. I also loved that not only was Rose revealed as a werewolf, she was the pack leader, and she was commanding, ruthless, and sadistic (that smirk definitely shows that she enjoys her evil handiwork). There's only one downer here: it would have been nice if we actually saw Rose's fangs and claws in the episode, but we were denied seeing Rose in her full werewolf form. Even so, Rose is one of my favorite villainesses from the bottom one-third of Supernatural, and it's thanks to Suki Kaiser's stellar performance, as well as the character's look as well.

Suki Kaiser's done the whole villainess thing before, with one instance being an appearance on Medium as tragic villainess Nadine Massey; click here for my review on that character! Kaiser also appeared on episodes of The Commish, Poltergeist: The Legacy, and Nash Bridges, and just under seven months after her SPN appearance, Kaiser took her fictional villainy to the Arrowverse, appearing in an episode of Arrow as evil businesswoman Janet Carroll.
