The original writers & directors of the first movie shotgun you into Apple's own FURY ROAD with an intense post-apocalyptic chase. A beautiful and gory, action-packed, heart (decapitated) felt moment taking place a few hours before the original cult movie.

There is something about this that is disarmingly charming. Whether it is the fact that Apple is this lost innocent soul who is as clueless as she is deadly or if it’s something else entirely that I’m letting slip from my grasp well the Magic 8-Ball says it's unclear. It is there though and it is something so easily felt by the reader that it makes such a huge impact on what it is we see. Sure she’s still got her friend on the bike of the bike he’s riding and that’s endearing in its own way and yes there is bloodshed galore happening here but even with all the creepiness and violence that we see there’s something that much stronger at the core of the story and that takes me by such complete and utter surprise. Which is saying something considering what I felt about the first issue, which is why I’m back for this one, but this issue surpasses the first one and that’s precisely what it should do.

I am a fan of the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter does a fabulous job in keeping these personalities growing and evolving. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the story it really manages to bring us into this world beautifully.

I like the way that we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to grow, emerge, evolve and strengthen. The layers open up new avenues to be explored and while this is the final issue of this little story with the depth, dimension and complexity it adds it does make me want to see more of Apple. The way that everything works together to create the story’ ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is extremely well achieved.

The interiors here are a lot stronger than last issue as well. It just goes to show the longer you work on something the better at it you become. The linework is phenomenal and how we see its varying weights and techniques being utilised to bring about the detail within the work that we see is sensationally well rendered. Now I wish we’d see more backgrounds being used but hey it’s okay it’s the desert and there’s not much so what does impress me is how we see the composition within the panels bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show an incredibly sharp eye for storytelling. Now I love that red is the only colour we see and that the pages themselves aren’t black & white but more sepia toned pages to denote the age of the paper. The blacks, reds and shades of gray tones being utilised are incredibly well rendered and again I'm impressed with the quality of the work that we see here.

Having never heard of the film this is based off of this story has made me an instant fan of this world and of Apple’s. I want to see more of Apple’s adventures and after such a strong debut it would be a shame if this were all we got to see of her. The writing really is rather intense and the characterisation is utterly charming while the interiors are strong and expressive. All of which screams out for more of her adventures.
