In April of this year actress Trina McGee revealed that she dealt with racism on the set of Boy Meets World. Her character came to the show long after her castmates had been working together for years. The others had a comradery and perhaps did not want a newcomer to upset the apple cart. Based on their individual backgrounds, perhaps they had not had any direct contact with African Americans. This sounds difficult to believe for the 1990s but it very well may be true. The bottom line is that on screen, in reel time McGee's character, Angela became one of the gang and dated Corey's best friend Shawn. In real-time, however, the actress says she experienced racism and indifference from most of the cast.

According to The Root, Danielle Fishel, (Topanga) apologized for being rude to McGee on the set and said she was dealing with some things at the time. Will Friedle, (Eric) also said he regretted how he treated his castmate. McGee said Friedle would call her Aunt Jemimah while she was getting her hair and make-up done. It's disheartening to think all of this was going on behind the scenes on such a beloved television show. In addition to Trina McGee being a newcomer and perhaps seen as a fifth wheel was the fact that she was 25 and much older than the rest of the cast. Her age, being the new girl, and also being African American obviously made some of her costars uncomfortable.

One cast member who has not reached out to McGee is Ben Savage, (Cory) who along with Fishel gave Trina the cold shoulder when she guest starred on Girl Meets World. Shadow and Act reveals that the actress says she was referred to as a bitter bitch but the name of the person who said it was not given. McGee said that after taping the series finale of the show, she was told, "Nice of you to join us," as if she were an outsider. This came after she had taped 60 episodes of Boy Meets World. McGee emphasizes that Rider Strong never gave her problems and the crew treated her well. She did not mention the actors who portrayed Mr. Feeny and Cory's parents.

This gives the impression that Ben Savage, was the root of most of the problems the actress encountered. McGee says she is not trying to make trouble but basically just sharing her truth. She says the environment was toxic on the set of Boy Meets World and she almost was never greeted by her costars. She added that she was a mother and just wanted to do her job and did not need the extra drama. Although she did not give specific names, she said she was ridiculed in front of everyone for believing in God. Will Friedle calling the actress Aunt Jemimah is pretty disrespectful. Trina says that even though he apologized she does not believe he meant it.

Viewers loved Boy Meets World and enjoyed watching Cory and Topanga grow up and eventually marry. The friendship with Shawn was a true bromance and Topanga got it and was never jealous. Viewers also loved the relationship with Shawn and Angela and no one had any idea of what was going on off camera. It sounds like the men who portrayed the Matthews brothers gave McGee the most trouble when you read between the lines. At least Friedle and Fishel took the time to reach out to their former castmate but Ben Savage has remained silent.

Trina McGee is 52, Will Friedle 44, Danielle Fishel 39, and Ben Savage and Rider Strong are both 40. McGee was a decade older than the others and as a wife and mother more mature. Racism is never appropriate no matter what age but if this was a result of youth, why did Strong have no problem with his costar especially the love scenes? You never know what is inside of anyone's heart but the fact that Ben Savage has not addressed the situation speaks volumes. Will Friedle may have simply been immature and a prankster like his character and since then grown up since he did reach out to McGee as did Fishel.

Not only has Ben Savage not apologized but he has not even tried to clear his name or let his fans know that he is not racist in the seven months since McGee shared her reality. Most people in the entertainment business like to set the record straight when they are accused of things in public. It looks like Savage does not care about the allegations as he has made no move to deny them. McGee says that the fans reaction to her interracial romance with Shawn was overwhelmingly positive and some viewers expressed wanting to see the couple reunite after they broke up. Ben Savage, the world awaits your response to these accusations.
