The Trunk Ending Explained

Yun Ji-o Was Behind Tae-seong's Murder

By WHB KHNPublished about a year ago 5 min read

When the murder of Um Tae-seong (Kim Dong-won) was solved, Netflix's The Trunk came to a satisfactory end. The Trunk, which stars Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin, is a captivating tale about a mystery trunk that leads to the discovery of a dead body. Han Jeong-won (Gong), a drug-addicted music producer, is at the center of the show's plot. He is coerced into a fictitious marriage by his ex-wife, Lee Seo-yeon (Jung Yun-Ha), and a corporation named New Marriage (NM). One of NM's best employees, Noh In-ji (Seo), is married to Jeong-won.

Jeong-won and In-ji start to fall in love as they get to know one another, but their pasts cause problems in their relationship. After being discharged from a mental health facility, Tae-seong is committed to preventing Jeong-won and In-ji from getting together, but he goes too far and is killed by an NM staff member. Jeong-won and In-ji split in the K-drama romance's season finale, and Tae-seong's killer is taken into custody.

At the end of the trunk, do Jeong-won and In-ji end up together?

The Trunk revolves around the romance between Jeong-won and In-ji, although it's unclear if they were able to stay together in the show's conclusion. Despite their initial apprehension about developing an emotional bond, In-ji and Jeong-won end up becoming very important to one another in their planned marriage. Jeong-won gives In-ji a sense of life again, and In-ji is crucial to Jeong-won's recovery. It's unexpected that In-ji chooses to abandon their marriage given how they ultimately feel about one another.

But Jeong-won feels that they were destined to be together, which makes sense given that even before they were married, In-ji had supported him through his worst hours. He advises In-ji to try their relationship again if they happen to cross paths twice. After some time spent apart recovering from their experience, they happen to cross paths in the street, which is considered to be their first chance encounter. The ending raises the prospect of their reunion, even if the show doesn't say whether they will ever cross paths again.

The contents of the trunk

The series consists of two identical trunks, each containing distinct contents. In-ji owns one of them, while Seo-yeon has the other, which was in Jeong-won's ownership following their divorce. In order to expose the falsity of In-ji and Jeong-won's marriage and put an end to it, Tae-seong breaks into their house and takes a trunk he believes holds the NM manual and their marriage contract. He unintentionally obtained Seo-yeon's one, though.

He calls In-ji when he can't open the trunk and entices her to the lake where she used to paddle in the hopes that she will unlock it if he puts Jeong-won's life in danger. When she enters the incorrect combination, it becomes clear that the trunk is not hers, but Tae-seong is unaware of this. When Seo-yeon is being questioned regarding Tae-seong's death in the conclusion of The Trunk, the detective wants her to make sure nothing has gone missing by looking into the trunk. Toys and clothing that Seo-yeon purchased for her unborn child are in her trunk.

Who Was Eom Tae-seong's killer?

However, who is responsible for Tae-seong's murder is the plot point that serves as The Trunk's hook. The cops find a dead body soon after removing an enigmatic trunk from the water in the first episode of the show. The deceased was Tae-seong, a former NM employee who had been pursuing In-ji. Tae-seong put everyone in her vicinity in risk and made In-ji's life a living hell. When In-ji and Tae-seong meet at the lake, she shoots him when he attacks her, but he lives since the bullets are blank.

In the 2024 K-drama, Yun Ji-o (Jo Yi-geon) killed Tae-seong, despite the fact that other characters wanted him dead. Ji-o was there when one of NM's keepers was viciously killed by Tae-seong, but he did nothing to stop it. Guilt-ridden, Ji-o, a trained fencer and security guard at NM, accepts the company's CEO's request to kill Tae-seong in order to make amends for his first error.

Reasons for Seo-yeon's Desire for Jeong-won and In-ji to Wed

Seo-yeon's unhealthy attachment to Jeong-won is evident from the first episode of The Trunk. Even though she didn't want to be a mother, Jeong-won became pregnant because Seo-yeon wanted a kid before they got divorced. In the hopes that she and her child would perish, Seo-yeon entered a busy street as the day of her baby's birth drew near.

After seeing the incident, Jeong-won selected his infant as the first person the medics asked him to save. After hearing what he had to say, Seo-yeon became enraged since she desired to be the most significant individual in his life. She came up with a scheme to regain control over Jeong-won after she recovered. In the hopes that he would fall in love with her and plead with her to return to him, she sets him up with In-ji. Jeong-won is completely taken aback when she falls in love with In-ji, which makes it more difficult for her to control him.

What transpired with Seo-yeon during the finale of The Trunk

Seo-yeon's strategy starts to unravel as the series progresses. In order to monitor the development of his connection with In-ji, Jeong-won finds out that she has placed a camera in his home. Spying on him is the last straw among all the horrible things Seo-yeon has done to him during their relationship. Her acts are even more heinous because she is aware that Jeong-won's father had done the same thing to his mother.

Seo-yeon attempts suicide after realizing she had lost Jeong-won forever. She insists on staying with Jeong-won when she awakens, and he grudgingly consents while restating his desire to avoid her. The acts of Seo-yeon can be difficult to interpret due of her complexity. She feels she deserves to be with someone who shares her distorted moral compass, as seen by her decision to give her troubled marriage with Ji-o another chance.

What the End of the Trunk Actually Means

The question of whether Jeong-won and In-ji will cross paths again is the only cliffhanger in The Trunk's season finale. Since In-ji still has her trunk, which has proof of the company's existence, NM is no longer in danger of being exposed following Tae-seong's passing. With the assurance that they will reunite in the future, In-ji and Jeong-won split up. Tae-seong's murder is solved, and Seon-yeon finds the proper partner. The Trunk's chances of getting a second season renewal are slim because it wrapped up all its loose ends.
