Climb every mountain to find your dream.

Traveling over the mountains and onto the North Shore Music Theatre stage, The Sound of Music is the true story of a young novice named Maria Rainer who is sent by her convent to be a governess to seven children of a widowed naval officer. Maria’s presence restores bonds and establishes new beginnings in the Von Trapp family.

Audiences had nothing but good things to say about North Shore Music Theatre’s rendition of The Sound of Music. A timeless classic, The Sound of Music is a story about finding one's voice and purpose. The talented cast, beautiful music, and deep expression of the show’s message left audiences (especially me) with a renewed appreciation for the musical.

The lead actors charismatically delivered standout performances, capturing the essence of their roles. Desi Oakley’s portrayal of Maria was breathtaking. She had impressive vocals, excellent comedic timing, and created genuine connections with the children.

As the stern Captain Georg Von Trapp, Joseph Spieldenner was terrific in the role. It is truly heartwarming how he bonds with his children. The chemistry between Maria and the Captain was palpable, making their love story even more touching.

However, it was the remarkable children ensemble who stole the show. Shining brightly in their respective roles, each child brought a unique personality to the stage. From the charming and sweet Gretl to the headstrong and rebellious Liesl, and overly truthful Brigitta, their round of applause during bows was unforgettable.

As I have said and will always continue to remark, no part is ever small in the theater. The ensemble had much to do, such as playing the nuns in the abbey, butlers who have been doing their job for far too long, Liesl's crush Rolf Gruber, or the humble Mother Abbess. Janinah Burnett graced audiences with her operatic voice in ‘Climb Ev’ry Mountain.’

Including realistic sound cues of a thunderstorm, seamless set changes, and breathtaking set work to represent the mountains, the technical crew was hard at work making The Sound of Music a memorable show for all.

If you don’t know the music, then you’re sure to sing it on the way out of the theater like several audience members did. ‘Do-Re-Mi’ was the audience's favorite. Singing with a live orchestra, other songs include, ‘Sixteen Going on Seventeen,’ ‘My Favorite Things,’ and ‘So Long, Farewell.’

Kevin P, Hill renewed The Sound of Music, breathing life into a classic story that has been told for generations. He resonated with several audiences who fondly recalled memories of their own stories based on the show. Hill did a tremendous job working with the cast, the stage direction for song numbers, and most importantly the show’s message.

Hill beautifully weaved themes of family, love, and resilience while subtly touching upon the struggles of society. NSMT’s portrayal delved deep into these nuances, allowing the audience to connect with the characters on a more profound level.

I want to thank the entire team of NSMT’s The Sound of Music for changing my opinion on this musical. I never gave the musical a chance to understand the meaning of the story or appreciate the music. Upon listening to customers talk about the show’s positive influence along with experiencing the show with a more open mind, I have a new place in my heart for it.

Well done to North Shore Music Theatre’s The Sound of Music. The show not only captured the hearts of the audience but also revived a love for a classic tale that will continue to last for years to come.
