As Ro’s isolation takes a turn toward the dark, a series of events reveals more of the true nature of her mysterious companion.

At first this was a quirky almost gothic style romance between a woman and the ghost of the house and this issue Skottie decides to completely flip the script on us and show the reality behind the fantasy. I was surely not prepared for this issue that’s for sure. Okay, yes so it was odd that Ro was having this fling with the dead person and then we see this isn’t exactly a person but more of a thing and still it maintains this romantic edge that borders creepy and endearing. Oh Sweet Child O’ Mine. no ma’am this is where things go over to the dark side and it does it fast and savagely. Bravissimo on totally catching me off guard and making me all kinds of even more uncomfortable with the relationship we see the two having because this is what I live for. I want to see things that keep me on my toes, that aren’t predictable and make me so uneasy because of what we see that I’m creeped out and fascinated at the same time.

I’m loving the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter does a magnificent job keeping up with their evolving personalities. The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twist & turns, revelations and more we’re swept up in a flurry of emotions and the desire to see more.

I’m liking the way that we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen. The layers open up new avenues to explore beautifully and whether they will be or not isn’t relevant because they all add so much depth, dimension and complexity to the story. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is impeccably rendered.

I am blown away by the creativity and imagination that we see within the interiors here. From the house itself lit by candlelight or the creature, who legit makes me shudder, how we see everything is bloody brilliant! The scenes inside the house versus outside the house, her agent in the park for example, nearly look like two separate artists in action and the dichotomy this provides is stunning. How we see backgrounds utilised to enhance and expand the moments as well as how they work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is marvellous. The utilisation of the page layouts, including how we see those piano keys, is bloody phenomenal and the angles and perspective in the panels show a masterful eye for storytelling. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work show a brilliant eye for how colour works and how to maximise their effects.

Now I have no idea how this is going to end and then to see the sheer volume of work she’s done already is amazing to me. Kudos to Skottie for using a Bettlejuice reference here that’s pretty brilliant in itself and it just goes to show there’s some kind of influence happening here. I love the fact that each issue gets stronger than the previous one and it takes us on this journey through the haunted mansion in ways that we just don’t expect to see. With some fabulous writing, stellar characterisation and some amazingly delightful interiors this just grabs you by the sac and doesn’t let go.
