Junji Ito's "Frankenstein"
Junji Ito is the master of horror manga responsible for Uzumaki and other modern classics. His adaptation of Frankenstein is rather workmanlike and truncated but does feature the requisite grotesque imagery and is as absorbing as his other work. However, coming at the beginning of the book, as might be expected, and comprising the largest section of it, it is rather less impressive than the stories that follow, the first several of which comprise the story of Turo Ichikiri, who lives in a massive stone edifice of haunted and horrifying aspect and supernatural menace.

Hellboy: "The Wild Hunt"
Strangely, there are few comic book characters quite as endearing as the lantern-jawed, shovel-headed, red-skinned, curly-tailed, seemingly aviator goggles-wearing (those are caps or something from where his horns were amputated) demon child turned alcoholic and incredibly taciturn adult male wandering hero Hellboy, who I take it was belched up from the lower depths to only be adopted by those charming old Brits involved in a super secret Occult Bureau investigating demonic and supernatural shenanigans on behalf of Her Majesty. I think that's the way it goes, but I better go and check.

Frank Frazetta is widely regarded as the "Father of Fantasy Illustration," at least in the modern sense, and Ralph Bakshi is an all-around genius in his own right, having put out a succession of wildly divergent animated films, from the X-rated blue humor of Fritz the Cat (1972) to the rumble-in-the-jungle drama of American Pop (1981) and Heavy Traffic (1973). He also was the first to plumb the depths of the immortal Tolkien "Rings" saga, with his admittedly incomplete adaptation of the first third of the famous trilogy (the sequels, regrettably, were never made), The Lord of the Rings (1978). A confessed long-time lover of fantasy epics, Bakshi also made the cult favorite Wizards (1977), which had voices provided by Mark Hamill of Star Wars legendry, among others.
