Leveling Up
Way back when, in the far away year of 2003, “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” was released upon unsuspecting audiences. No one knew what to expect, considering it was based on an amusement park ride that was without a story or characters, and its lead actor was Johnny Depp, who was merely an artsy-fartsy character actor at the time, and not a proven box office draw. Needless to say, the movie blew away all expectations, turning out to be a legitimately well written, well acted, and well made movie. So naturally, Disney had to ruin it by making four sequels, each of lesser quality than the last, to the point the series is now in talks to be rebooted altogether. Fast forward to 2017, Sony decided to release “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”, and while it isn’t as iconic as “PotC: TCotBP”, it was another movie that people had very little expectations for, and yet became a huge hit. So naturally, a sequel was made. Did it fall into the same trap as “Pirates”? Let’s find out together.

The Long Goodbye
As I look back on the year 2019, one story I couldn’t help but notice that was being pushed in the entertainment news media was the meteoric rise of one Nora Lum, aka “Awkwafina”. This self-made rapper turned actress from New York starred in a half dozen movies within the last three years, and was promoted as a comedic genius of sorts, even being named one of Entertainment Weekly’s Entertainers of the Year and Time Magazine’s 100 Influential People. I’ve seen some of her work, and while she is funny at times, she won’t be making anyone forget about the likes of George Carlin or Robin Williams any time soon. But then she took a serious turn and starred in an independent drama, and surprise, she can act, too. It’s a tale of culture clash, family matters, and the universal heartbreak of losing a loved one. The movie in question is “The Farewell”.

My Review of 'Lion'
Surprisingly, Lion is based off a true story. It's a biographical story of Saroo Brierley, played in the movie by Dev Patel. The crazy things that happen to Saroo seem so crazy that even I was questioning if they could have actually happened in real life. They were depicted well enough for me to believe that they actually happened though. It's sad to know that some people have to suffer as much as some of the people in this movie have.

Peter Pan
You all have seen Peter Pan cartoon in childhood, have not you? Well, when I watched it, I was about 10 to 12 years old. As I remember now, I was very impressed with the guy who wanted to stay a child for the rest of his life. I remember I had a concern regarding the topic. For a couple of days, I was even thinking about what is so bad about growing up? You will be independent, have your own money, your own life and can do everything you want. It does not seem to be that bad and literally, I did not get the idea of staying kid for the rest of their life to be honest. Now as I have grown up, it started to clear up and perhaps Peter was not wrong about his will.

'Survivor: Island of the Idols' Episode 12
Wow! What a great episode of Survivor tonight! First off, nice move taking out Karishma. Could've easily been Noura, but that's ok. Noura seems likely to be next to go by most people anyway considering how Dean destroyed her game. But, as revenge, Noura hid his shoes on top of the flag to signify that he could be next to go. The next morning, an idol hunt began. Dean and Elaine got up to search, knowing that they were big targets, possibly on their way out without the idol. But, Janet & Tommy also went looking and then, it happened. Janet found the idol, nice job Janet! So now, she & Tommy are in possession of it. But, Dean & Elaine caught them, so now they know that Janet has the idol.

What I Got From Watching 'Joker'
Now that the hype has died down and a good majority of people have seen this movie I thought I'd talk about the Joker flick. After watching Joker I felt the intention of the movie was to not only provide me the viewer with solid entertainment. It was also meant to make the viewer look at the type of person they are when they're around others. One of the few things that bothered me about the movie wasn't even in the movie. It was people saying they understand where Arthur was coming from, or they could relate to him. Or they understand why he did what he did when he was spiraling out of control. It seems like little to none of those comments online were people saying we've got to treat each other better. Yes because we might potentially send a fellow human being off the edge of sanity, but also because it's just the right thing to do. Every Gothamite felt like they were in their own bubble concentrating on their own world and own problems. The lady on the bus who wanted Arthur to stop making her kid laugh, to Arthur's coworkers. They all reminded me of people in the city I live in (Seattle). Very few greet you happily or strike a genuine conversation with a stranger, and if they do they're most likely from out of town.

'The Polar Express' - A Movie Review
I have an idea. Let’s catch a ride to the north pole on the Polar Express! The Polar Express rode into theaters in 2004. Based on the children’s story of the same name, a young boy boards a magical train on the night of Christmas Eve. A night of adventures and Christmas miracles happen on this journey.

War of the Worlds: Where Did it All Go Wrong?
Ever since a very young age I’ve been obsessed with War of the Worlds. I was aware of and enjoyed the campy 50’s analogy of nuclear war but it wasn’t until I watched a school performance of Jeff Wayne’s seminal adaption (complete with Tripod paintings attached to wheeled netball nets and Martians emerging from silver sprayed wheelie bins with tinfoil) that it really piqued my adolescent imagination. It was an ambitious production for a state secondary school to attempt but I remember vividly going home with my head spinning. The thought of an Anglo-centric invasion, in Edwardian England, both filled me with excitement and tantalising terror.

Review of 'His Dark Materials' 1.6
I'm not sure who the "His" is in His Dark Materials (I haven't read the books). I'm not even clear what the "Materials" are (the Dust? but I don't know yet exactly what that is, either). I do get the "Dark". And I also thought that last night's action-packed episode 1.6 moved preternaturally quickly.
