'The Whale' - Film Review and Analysis
2022 may be over but I am still thinking about the most emotionally impactful movie of the past year, which deserves its own review and analysis. Likely to be nominated for a few Academy Awards at the least an Oscar for Best Actor nomination for Brendan Fraser, ‘The Whale’ is a powerful film about a man’s desire to try to right past wrongs in some way before it is too late. ‘The Whale’, directed by director Darren Aronofsky shows us how low someone can go when things go wrong in life but also how our lowest lows can also bring out the best of us when it is most important.

What is a MacGuffin?
A MacGuffin is a plot element that propels a narrative forward, but ultimately has little importance to the story. In other words, it is something that the characters care about, but is irrelevant to the audience. It is primarily associated with director Alfred Hitchcock, but the term itself is attributed to his collaborator, screenwriter Angus MacPhail. One way to recognize a MacGuffin is to determine if it can be replaced without affecting the story. For example in Mission: Impossible, the entire plot is based on retrieving a list of all covert CIA operatives, but this could easily be swapped out for nuclear codes or a biological weapon, essentially the mission would be the same.

The Top 10 Movies of 2022 . Top Story - January 2023.
Best of 2022 I loved this year. I saw my new favorite movie of all time, we will get to that, but really, I have at least 25 movies that I could happily talk about for the rest of my life with fellow film lovers. 25 movies I saw this year I rated as 4.5 or 5 stars on Letterboxd. I may have done that before but honestly, it felt fresh this year. It feels fresh and new as I talk about it. I struggled hard with this list. I really wanted each of my Top 25 movies to be part of my Top 10 so I could write about them again. Nothing is stopping me from writing about them again, but I need a little restriction for this list.

Movie recap: The Fabelmans (2022)
The film opens in New Jersey in 1952, Burt and Mitzi take their son Sammy to the movies for the first time. The boy is afraid to go in, but his parents convince him that he's going to have a great time. The three of them go in to see "The Greatest Show on Earth", a movie that fascinates Sammy, but also leaves him shocked when he sees a scene in which a train crashes into a car. The couple also has Reggie, Natalie and baby Lisa, and that's when they all celebrate Hanukkah, a typical celebration of the Jewish religion. Sammy happily celebrates that his parents have bought him a train set. The boy rides it and teaches them how to make the trains crash. It is then that Mitzi realizes that the scene from the movie has stuck in her memory. The woman buys her a video camera so that her son can record the crash scene and watch it as many times as he wants until he overcomes his fear. Sammy then makes a short film of the train crash and shows it to his mother, who tells him it is the best film ever made.
