Real and fictitious pigs

Babe

Yesterday was National Pig Day to in honor of all pigs here are some of the most memorable ones.

Real

Babe

How I loved both movies with Babe the pig. This sweet pig became a pretty good sheepdog so to say. The movies were adapted from the 1983 novel "The Sheep Pig" by Dick King. It is a heartwarming Australian film that won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. In the original movie "Babe" everyone fell in love with the plucky piglet who showed bravery, intelligence, and lots of kindness. He also proved he could be a skilled sheepherder while coaxing the sheep to listen to him.

It is amazing that there is no one pig we can praise because the part of Babe was played by 48 different white Yorkshire pigs. The reason was that the pigs grew up so fast during filming they had to keep being replaced. Some scenes used animation and the American actress Christine Cavanaugh provided the voice for Babe.

Arnold Ziffle

Who could ever forget the lovable and intelligent pet pig on the classic TV series "Green Acres". This pig got to do what many humans had wanted to do at that time - Meet Eva Gabor. Arnold not only got to meet her but also star in the show with her. He was a lovable member of the Hooterville community with undeniable charm and wit.

Fictional

Miss Piggy

No one can deny that Miss Piggy is a true beauty. She has a flair for fashion and quickly became one of the most recognized Muppets of all time first appearing in the 1979 original film "The Muppet Movie". Miss Piggy was also an expert at karate and had a love of French phrases. Kermit the Frog quickly fell in love with her but their romance was always off and on.

Peppa Pig

We come to the ever popular Peppa Pig that began on the small screen and became the very successful Peppa Pig series. The show followed the adventures of Peppa and her animal friends. She became so popular that the show has been broadcast in more than 180 countries.

The Peppa Pig movie brought her to the big screen. It featured unreleased episodes and musical interludes with stage-show puppet versions of Peppa and her friend George, along with human buddy Emily.

Peppa's popularity grew and she has several theme parks named after her, appears in three video games, and has a large range of merchandise with her name on it.

Hamm

I would say that Hamm has a rather unfortunate name. He became popular in the Toy Story movies and was a wise-cracking pig friends with Woody and Buzz. This is a kind and caring piggy bank and his best buddy is Mr. Potato Head. Even though he's a minor character his appearances on screen are always memorable.

Porky Pig

Porky Pig has been my friend from childhood. He is a popular character from Warner Bros. Looney Tunes making him the oldest pig among the other here. He is best-known for his catchphrase “Th-th-th-that’s all, folks!” uttering it after every cartoon. Even though Porky stutters he is very charming. One of his good friends is Daffy Duck. No matter how many years have passed this pig is still working and he last appeared in the 2021 Space Jam sequel Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Petunia Pig

Petunia Pig has always been considered a love interest for Porky Pig. She is loveable and sweet and quite flirtatious. I always loved her dark hair and pigtails.

The Three Little Pigs

No child can ever forget the Three Little Pigs from the classic fairy tale. They are Practical Pig, Fifer Pig, and Fiddler Pig.They first appeared in a 8 minute short in 1933 and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.

The Big Bad Wolf comes along to spoil their fun and catch them. He blows down the houses of Fifer and Fiddler but cannot do anything about Practical Pig's brick house. When attempting to enter the house by chimney the mean wolf falls into a cauldron of boiling water and flees.

The moral of the story is don’t mess with the three little pigs.

Piglet

Among my top favorites is Piglet the best pal of Winnie the Pooh. Piglet shows unwavering loyalty and friendship toward his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood. Even though he is tiny and has bouts of anxiety he shows himself to be plucky with much courage and resilience in times of trouble. When the chips are down you can count on Piglet.

Pumbaa

Who could ever deny that Pumbaa the warthog from Disney's The Lion King gave the best advice Hakuna Matata or no worries. He is a delightful pig with a meerkat named Timon for a best friend. Pumbaa has a hearty appetite, carefree attitude, and can really entertain.

Hakuna Matata

Wilbur

Wilbur the pig from the story "Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White had always also been a favorite. This is an amazing piglet born the runt of the litter who befriends a spider named Charlotte. The classic book was first published in 1952.

I loved the 1973 animated movie with Wilbur, Charlotte, and a barnyard of talking and singing animals. Wilbur deserved the ovation he got at a state fair.

A fantasy movie was made in 2006 with popular actors and actresses providing voices for the barnyard animals with Julia Roberts giving voice to Charlotte and Dominic Scott Kay to Wilbur.

Pua

Pua the pig appeared in the Disney movie "Moana". He was a brave little pig and the loyal pet of Moana. This pig had many endearing qualities.

Hen Wen

Hen Wen was an adorable pig I first saw in the Disney movie "The Black Cauldron". She played a crucial role in guiding the story's hero Taran on his journey. Hen Wen could predict the future through mysterious runes. Her significance and wisdom made her enchanting and memorable. She is a character from The Chronicles of Prydan book series by Lloyd Alexander.
