The One Life to Live studios have been sold

One Life to Live was a popular daytime drama broadcast on ABC for 44 years, from July 15, 1968, to January 13, 2012. The success of Another World on NBC led ABC execs to hire Agnes Nixon to work her magic for OLTL, which took place in fictional Llanview PA. Viewers enjoyed the day to day antics of the characters and felt like they were family. I recall women watching this soap and others in the breakroom of the job I worked at the time.

Sadly, OLTL was canceled due to declining ratings but fans were elated when the soap later appeared online as a web series on Hulu and iTunes via Prospect Park from April 29 to August 19, 2013. Although the Internet version did not remain, followers continue today to discuss the show and the cast via many Facebook groups.

ABC makes a major change

ABC has made a move that will surely cause some One Life to Live fans to become wistful and nostalgic. The American Broadcasting Company has sold the historic New York City building that once housed OLTL studios, where episodes were taped until 2010. When Disney/ABC relocated the production of All My Children to Los Angeles, OLTL moved into the former Pine Valley space at 320 West 66th Street. This larger studio was just up the street.

The castle has a new owner

The three-story property is located at 56 West 66th Street and was built between 1900 and 1903 by the New York City Armory Board. The building, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, looks like a castle and was converted into a television studio in 1973.

ABC purchased the armory in 1976, adding to its existing properties in the Lincoln Square district. OLTL was located in Studio 17. The new owner is Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, a rabbinical seminary, and Reform Judaism Movement educational center.

HUC announced that it sold its Greenwich Village building to New York University and will relocate to West 66th Street sometime in 2027. “The new building, a landmarked armory that was extensively updated with modern systems by its last owner, will be reconfigured to include state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure for in-person and hybrid learning, as well as a library, beit midrash, and areas for prayer, community events, and exhibitions,” HUC said in a statement.

A historic property

This property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was one of ten built in New York City. It housed the First Battery of the New York National Guard until 1913. A portion of the building was home to ESPN’s New York City headquarters in recent years. In 2023, when Disney consolidated its offices throughout NYC the company put the castle up for sale for $30 million, according to real estate website The Real Deal.
