Obscure Movies for Netflix Bingers

Which obscure movie should you watch based on the last show you binged on Netflix?

Grace and Frankie / Kimmy Schmidt / Schitt's Creek : Tallulah

If you've just finished shows like Grace and Frankie, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, or even Schitt's Creek, you'll love Tallulah. It's heartfelt, comedic, and just a bit offbeat. A woman (Elliot Page) takes an infant from an unfit mother in a hotel room. With nowhere to go, Tallulah finds herself on the doorstep of her ex-boyfriend's mother's (Allison Janney) home and ends up in a lie to get her help.

No matter how uncomfortable the characters make you feel, they bring reality and a new edge to life lessons. The performances by these women, including Tammy Blanchard who plays Carolyn, are unmatched. You might not like them or their decisions all the time, but they do hit you with the truth about life and that's what makes it so great. It's gritty and real, and comedic. Everything you loved about your sitcoms, are thrown into this drama.

Behind Her Eyes / The Sinner : What Happened to Monday

You might like this dystopian thriller, if you've just finished binging Behind Her Eyes or the newest season of The Sinner. The twists and turns you just experienced will die down and eventually you'll need something new to kick up that adrenaline again. What Happened to Monday is the perfect next movie. Set in a world where each family is allowed one child, this movie follows a set of septuplets fighting to not be put to sleep by the government. That becomes more and more difficult as they try to find one of their own who goes missing.

The same intrigue and drama you found in Behind Her Eyes, will capture you in What Happened to Monday. Although, this movie has a bit more action, it feels similarly paced and is thoroughly enjoyable to most viewers. The plot-twists you loved, will definitely make an appearance or two. It's a more well-known movie, that I think everyone should enjoy at some point. Whether you like the dystopian genre or not, you'll find something to love.

Bridgerton : Carol

Although not as obscure as the other movies, I do believe Carol is a bit overlooked from time to time. Bridgerton has been the talk of Netflix lately, with everyone so enthralled with the romance and chemistry between The Duke and Daphne Bridgerton. I have to agree, the show really pulls through in the romance department. Carol might not have the strong immediate chemistry we've seen here, but it has the same intrigue and longing for our two friends to finally see their deep love for one another.

In this period drama, we see Carol (Cate Blanchett) and Therese (Rooney Mara) go from strangers to intertwined in a spectrum of feelings and relational wonder. Deeply emotional and heartfelt, this cinematic romance will bring you to tears. Forbidden love, societal impact on relationships, and the butterflies you get when you're not sure how they feel about you. It brings you through all of your emotions. So when you're ready, when you've emotionally moved on from not having more Rege-Jean Page to watch, grab a box of tissues and enjoy this magical, romantic ride.

The Umbrella Academy / Unorthodox : I Am Mother

These shows may seem a bit different on the surface, but I promise there's a reason I've picked each one. Unorthodox has a theme of belonging, and escaping to find your place in the world and what you believe in. I Am Mother, though dystopic and science fiction, gives off some of those same themes. The Umbrella Academy is where I find the science fiction, dysfunctional side of the movie. Just as the family in The Umbrella Academy, we find our main character in a dysfunctional relationship.

I Am Mother follows a young girl, named Daughter (Clara Rugaard-Larsen), who is raised alone by a robot who has a mission of repopulating the Earth. When Daughter becomes older, she meets Woman (Hillary Swank) who flips what she thought of the world upside down. With only three lead women cast in this futuristic film, the acting has to be outstanding enough to make you continue watching. It is. Clara Ruggard-Larsen gives a phenomenal performance, as does the rest of the cast. It's a mind-bending film based on desire, loneliness, and trust.

The Good Place : Stranger Than Fiction

Everyone fell in love with The Good Place the second it aired. You can't put Kristen Bell as a lovable, realistic, and messy main character without people gravitating to it. I'm sure many people have finished binging it by now, but if you're still in the mood to re-watch it try Stranger Than Fiction instead. It has the depth of dying and real life hard questions, with the hilarity of Will Ferrell. It's an older movie (2006), but one that many people overlook or have forgotten about.

Honestly, I didn't think Will Ferrell would be able to captivate me enough to hit me in the feels during this movie, but the role of Harold Crick could not have been played by anyone else. Joining him in the cast is Maggie Gyllenhaal, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, and Queen Latifah. In my opinion, this is one of Emma Thompson's best roles yet. She plays an author who is writing a fictional book about Harold Crick (Will Ferrell). Harold begins to hear her voice in his head and uncovers that he is in fact the main character in the author's next book. On one end, a book-company employee is trying to get Karen Eiffel to finish writing her story, while on the other end a professor is attempting to help Harold get her to change what she's written. It's remarkably heartfelt, engaging, and dramatically depressing. If you enjoyed the dark comedy of The Good Place, you'll find it easy to watch Stranger Than Fiction.
