'Nobody Wants This' is one of my favorite 2024 series.

Decisions reflect human needs.

Nobody Wants This is a 2024 Netflix series. Joanne and Noah, one an agnostic sex podcaster and the other a newly single rabbi fall in love. As they discover how to make their relationship work, they must dig deeper to survive their wildly different lives and meddling families.

Nobody Wants This is one of my favorite 2024 series. I binged it in three nights. It’s one of the most authentic series about relationships and Jewish culture. The series is funny but takes itself seriously. Nobody Wants This teaches viewers how honesty is the most important part of any relationship.

This series stars Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, who play Joanne and Noah. You’d never expect them to be a couple, but opposites attract. Their chemistry is striking. It’s an example that you don’t have to hold similar interests as long as you are happy.

Bell and Brody have received well-deserved nominations for their performances in the upcoming Golden Globes. Kristen Bell does a good job conducting her role, particularly with her emotions. Joanne isn’t the most serious person, but she means well. That’s what’s important.

Credit is due to Adam Brody for his honest portrayal of rabbis and Jewish culture. Brody studied Jewish culture to prepare for his role. Noah has challenging decisions to make, basing outcomes on his intuition.

Some unexpected actors play supporting roles in Nobody Wants This. Credits include Justine Lupe, Timothy Simons, and Jackie Tohn. Good old character actor Stephen Tobolowsky has a good role as Rabbi Cohen. And the comical Sherry Cola plays one of Joanne’s friends. The cast is strong, creating fascinating characters.

Dynamics between characters play an enormous part in the series. There’s no filter between Joanne and her sister, Morgan (Lupe). Esther (Tohn) watches Joanne like a hawk, knowing her game as she tries to bond with her.

Credit goes to Erin Foster for making a series that many audiences have waited years for needed representation. Foster created Nobody Wants This is based on her relationships with her now husband. Similar to Joanne, Foster didn’t grow up with ‘structures’ and was interested in branching out to learn about Jewish culture.

Not all the storylines depicted in the series are true with Foster using creative license. The best example is the relationships between the families. Despite bumps in the road, Joanne’s family has made things work. I got a kick out of Noah’s mother who acts conservative in front of Joanne but leads a completely different view behind everyone’s back.

This series has fun being what it is. The writing is sharp, balancing humor and emotion effortlessly. It’s a genuinely funny show that knows when it needs to be serious. I enjoyed watching the Bat Mitzvahs. They looked so fun to film.

The direction is equally impressive, crafting a visual narrative that feels intimate yet expansive. For viewers unfamiliar with these traditions, the show serves as an accessible introduction. I learned more than I thought I would. I also watched the series with my grandmother who was hooked from the first episode.

I didn’t think I was going to like this series. Nobody Wants This is a show about relationships, but enforces a theme we don’t see enough of - being tolerant of others' cultures. We don’t have enough shows that depict Jewish culture.

Nobody Wants This concludes with one of the toughest decision outcomes. It’s an easy series to binge with most episodes being 20 minutes long. I am so relieved that we are getting more of this series.
