North Atlantic Ballet Created Winter Magic in 'The Nutcracker'
'The Nutcracker' is an admired story that continues to reach new audiences.

Dreams are strangely familiar places.
North Atlantic Ballet performed a dazzling holiday production of the timeless story, The Nutcracker on December 20. The story centers around Clara, a young girl who receives a magical Nutcracker doll on Christmas Eve. Clara embarks on an enchanting journey, encountering battles with the Mouse King in the Land of Snow.
On a snowy December evening, I saw North Atlantic Ballet’s The Nutcracker at the Cabot Theatre. The Nutcracker is an admired story that continues to reach new audiences. It was a dazzling holiday show, filled with passion, exceptional talent, and innovative storytelling that audiences enjoyed.
The ensemble of North Atlantic Ballet was splendid. Juliana Crocker brought a tender spirit to the role of Clara. She captured the wonder and curiosity of the young girl. Molly Bagtaz’s portrayal of the Nutcracker was excellent. Her movements reflected the heroism of her character.
The highlight of the show was Ronnie Thomas playing dual roles, Drosselmeyer and the Cavelier. He was captivating and enigmatic. Not only did he bring depth to the roles, but his dancing was marvelous.
The ensemble was equally remarkable, filling the stage with life and energy. Katrina Gould marveled as the Sugar Plum Fairy. From the playful cherubs to the nimble mice and the shimmering snowflakes, each performer contributed to the vibrancy of the production. The young dancers, especially, brought a sense of authenticity and joy that was heartwarming to witness.

The choreography by Lucy Warren-Whitman was spectacular. The dances blended traditional ballet with innovative elements that added a contemporary flair to the production. Rehearsals lasted eight weeks, with professional performers rehearsing Monday-Thursday 10 am to 3 pm and then adding the younger performers on weekends.
Warren-Whitman also directed this production of The Nutcracker. In her interpretation, she paid the most focus to the storyline. The story of The Nutcracker holds themes about magic, bravery, and transformation. “We place great emphasis on the storyline, encouraging each performer to bring their character to life,” she said.
She also updated the timeline to make this version more modern. I always like it when shows do something different. It enhances the experience for audiences of all generations. “This collaborative effort creates an immersive world for the audience, making the story vibrant and engaging,” Warren-Whitman explained.
One element that stuck with me from North Atlantic Ballet’s production is how powerful non-verbal shows are. The Nutcracker is a non-speaking show in which the cast did an excellent job showcasing facial cues or other necessary non-verbal behavior.
The Cabot Theatre made the best stage for telling North Atlantic Ballet’s The Nutcracker. Set designer Jesse Rosell transformed the Cabot stage into a winter wonderland, complete with a towering Christmas tree decorated with ornaments, colorful backdrops, and softly falling snow, evoking the cozy magic of the season. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's iconic score carried beautifully throughout the auditorium.
Every costume added to the visual splendor of the show. The costumes by Li-Ann Lim and Warren-Whitman were equally stunning, with intricate designs that perfectly captured each character’s essence. Clara’s red flowing party dress was beautiful. The Sugar Plum Fairy’s shimmering tutu was another highlight.
Well done to North Atlantic Ballet for a triumphant evening of storytelling, dancing, and spreading Christmas joy. Many families were in attendance that night. Children who were seeing The Nutcracker for the first time delightfully watched or asked questions to their parents. “The performing arts have a unique ability to open hearts, inspire, and spark possibilities, often before the curtain even rises,” explains Warren-Whitman. “In the theater, anything can happen.”
