My Review of "Warrior"

After ignoring so many recommendations I finally caved in and watched it. This is what I thought.

Warrior has been suggested to me by so many people. It's also placed in a ton of top 10's of many YouTubers. Apparently it's a guys version of a tearjerker movie. I don't know why but it never really appealed to me despite the fact that I do love sports movies. I think it may have been because the movie has been hyped so much.

I finally got to watch it and I have to say it is a decent movie but I think my expectations were a little high because of all the people suggesting it to me. Still I had a great time watching it and I can see why everyone keeps raving over it. However, I don't know if it deserves as much hype as it gets because it does feel very familiar. Then again, this movie did come out back in 2011.

The movie starts up with the character Tommy. He's just come back to his hometown of Pittsburgh and he seems a little messed up. He joins an mixed martial arts (MMA) gym. When a big shot MMA fighter needs to find an opponent to train with Tommy asks to fight. Everyone thinks its ridiculous for this big shot MMA fighter to fight this no name just off the street. They thought Tommy would get creamed but it's the other way around. Everyone records it because it's such an unexpected conclusion. Tommy made the big shot look like a rag doll.

Tommy then visits his estranged father Paddy and we see a little more about Tommy's past as well as how horrible Paddy had been to the family. He basically ripped the family apart. The one good thing that Paddy had done was train Tommy to fight. Tommy wants nothing to do with Paddy except for him to help train for a big competition coming up.

Meanwhile Tommy's brother Brendan lives in the city as a school teacher with his wife and kids. They're going through really tough times. The bank is threatening to take their home away from them. This was just after the big 2008 housing crisis so it kind of makes sense with the times. We all remember how the market value of houses had plummeted to record lows. This made it difficult for some families with mortgages because the value of their houses was substantially less than the value of their mortgages.

Brendan and his wife Tess are struggling to keep things afloat by working 3 jobs between the two of them. Brendan had even resorted to fighting in underground fight competitions. His side hustle eventually gets discovered by the principle and as a result Brendan is suspended from teaching.

He's in a desperate position and thinks that he can continue to fight to help keep the roof over his family. Tess is adamantly against this and but she reluctantly agrees because of the situation they're in.

As the movie progresses we learn more about the relationship between the two brothers and their abusive father. However, Paddy has turned a new leaf and has been clean from alcohol. He's trying to make amends with both of his sons but some things just can't be forgotten that easily I guess. A lot of movie use this as a crutch to keep movies going. It's true though, if you've lived a life of such abuse, how do you react?

Tommy is a very complicated character that becomes even more interesting as the movie progresses. There's some stuff that he had done in the past that come back to haunt him. It's like pulling teeth for him to spill any of this information too. He's a very quiet loner but you can tell that all of the things in his past had influenced how he is now.

You get your usual training and fighting montage. There's nothing really special about the montage, they just want us to understand that they've worked hard to get where they are.

They did however make the fight scenes very visceral. You can really feel the impact of some of the throws, punches and kicks. Even the holds they get into look pretty painful. There is a very authentic MMA feeling to this movie. The environment and spectacle was done very well.

I can see why people like this movie. The cast does a really good job portraying their characters. I was sucked into the movie with their charisma and charm. It just makes the fights even more impactful because I got so invested in the characters.

Overall, I thought this was a pretty good movie. I thought it was a little predictable but sports movies are supposed to be predictable. I do think that they kind of ended the movie a little too early because there's so many holes that need to be filled at the end. It's understandable why they ended the movie the way they did but I'm sure I'm not the only person that wanted to see what happened to these characters at the end. I have to give this movie a 7.5 out of 10. It's a movie that I could recommend to sports movie aficionados.
