My Review of "Twisters"

This is one of the most cartoonish disaster movies I've seen in a while.

Twisters is sort of a reboot of an old popular movie from the 90s called Twister. It's aptly named because there are a ton of twisters in this movie and it's kind of ridiculous. I have to give this movie some credit because we haven't had a disaster movie in a while. Though the devastation of this movie is isolated to some small towns, I'd still consider this a disaster movie. I miss them so maybe that was what triggered me to watch this one.

The movie starts out with a brilliant meteorologist sort of student named Kate. She has this idea that she can dissipate a tornado with some sort of weird concoction that she fills up in barrels. Her confidence in her idea is so strong that she convinces a whole team of friends to help her make it happen. Unfortunately, this is the very beginning of the movie so you know something is going to go wrong.

She and her friends get deep into a gigantic tornado and release the concoction into the tornado. Sadly, it doesn't work out for her and her friends. Basically all of her friends get sucked up into the tornado and die grizzly deaths. Only her and her friend Javi survive the aftermath.

Five years later we see that Kate is now living in New York away from all the tornado craziness. She's shook up by the events that had occurred but Javi finds a way to pull her right back into the mix of things. He now has the resources to help save lives and he needs Kate's expertise to figure out a way to research tornadoes.

Along the way they bump into a band of rapscallion YouTubers, led by the charismatic Tyler. They're chasing tornadoes as well but it seems as though they're chasing them for fame and views on their media platforms. This soon becomes a chase for who can get to a big tornado first. That doesn't seem to be very exciting but they have a ton of shaky cams and idiotic driving to amp up the excitement.

This movie is a bit of a mess. I'm glad it made a lot of money in the theatres but I don't see why. You'd think that Kate would have more post traumatic stress disorder after losing all of her friends to a tornado. She seems to shake things off in a matter of hours. I though the whole tornado thing was pretty cartoonish too.

The location that they're at somehow has 3 or 4 different tornadoes in the same spot in a matter of a few hours. Yet we have citizens in that came town thinking that the news is fake. They don't think that they get tornadoes. It's really far fetched especially when you see the destruction and chaos that comes with tornadoes that they experience. These tornadoes are coming in left right and center at any given moment. It'll be sunny and then all of a sudden boom tornado. I was thinking that global warming was bad but these people must be living in some sort of apocalyptic nightmare.

Each of the relationships are really weird as well. They're all awkward and some of them are very cringy. I felt uncomfortable when some of the characters were together. There was no natural connection between any of the characters. It felt very off.

I did like the fact that they focused more on the human element of helping the community out closer to the end of the movie. Something about little guy versus big corporation element of this movie made me think about who funds these movies. I'm shocked that this is always a common theme throughout Hollywood movies yet the big corporations are the ones funding these movies. You'd think they'd have some sort of propaganda to support their agendas. Well there are advertisements so maybe it's a sneaky way of getting us to buy their stuff.

One weird thing about this movie was that I kept mistakening the lead character to be played by Dakota Johnson. I thought she was almost identical to her in mannerisms and everything. This could be a generational thing but they were very similar in many ways.

Overall, you can probably tell that I didn't care for this movie that much. It's got some fun disaster scenes but they could have leaned more into that aspect of the movie if that's what they're going for. The characters and storyline just did not sit well with me and felt like people throwing ideas at the wall. I have to give this one a 4 out of 10.

For sure agree about all the relationships being kind of weird and cringey in the movie, it felt like a pretty odd choice considering the romance direction they took the movie in. Great review!

I was initially thinking about watching this when I heard it was a remake of the older movie. Once k saw the trailer though, it was all over. You’re right with your analysis, the whole thing just seems like a cartoon. Great review mate x
