My Review of the "Sony X900H"

A TV that you definitely have to check out

By Brian AnonymousPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Sony X900H recently came out and it's touted to be the television that Sony is pushing people to get to work with the new PlayStation 5 that comes out next week. Everything is in a rush and you can tell that Sony is pushing themselves to hit their deadlines.

I was one of the lucky ones that was able to preorder the PlayStation 5 by accident. There was a whole debacle that allowed stores to make preorders for the PlayStation 5 before the announcement of the preorders. My friend had mentioned that the preorders were showing up online so I thought why not? I ordered it and the payment process went through! I guess I'm getting mine at launch? I hope I do because it does seem like a pretty exciting system to get.

One of the big things about the PlayStation 5 is that it will now support HDMI 2.1. There aren't a whole lot of televisions that support HDMI 2.1 that is unless they're high end TV's. Some of these TV's are outrageously outside of my budget and make it very unlikely for me to see the full potential of the PlayStation 5. I think Sony realized that HDMI isn't readily available for everyone at this moment namely because not a lot of things support HDMI 2.1 except for computers and the next generation gaming systems.

Seeing as they're in the television sales business as well they decided that they'd capitalize on the situation and make a somewhat affordable TV with an HDMI 2.1 input. That so happens to be the Sony X900H. They started touting this television to be the TV to get if you're buying a PlayStation 5 because it's somewhat affordable and will support HDMI 2.1.

The problem is that it doesn't support HDMI 2.1 right now. Right out of the box it's noted that the HDMI 2.1 features are not available until a new firmware is created and uploaded to the TV. This will have a lot of gamers pretty pissed because Xbox one X does support variable refresh rate (VRR) a feature that HDMI 2.1 is supposed to support. We can't see that VRR work properly because the firmware doesn't exist.

So if you're looking for an HDMI 2.1 game system you're going to have to wait for a firmware update or get yourself an OLED TV. Those TV's will eventually go down in price. Probably when the X900H gets its firmware update.

Still this is a fantastic TV despite the HDMI 2.1 setback. The visuals are reminiscent of old OLED TV's I used to see back in the days. Its colors are rich and vibrant. I caught myself just staring at YouTube 4k 60 fps videos from hours on end. It's just that beautiful. I've never experienced HDR before and I now understand the difference between the brightness in colors for HDR and SDR after using this TV for a while.

The menu system is a bit clunky. I go from game to movie to computer on this TV and I find that I always have to change the pictures settings manually from game to cinema to graphics. I have to play around with the motion settings often because of movies. Who wants movies to look like soap operas? It's really annoying and I wished the TV had better intelligence to decipher the differences between games and movies.

The look of the TV in general is actually quite nice. It's got a metallic trim around the TV that really gives it a more elegant look than most matte black TV's. I kind of wish that you can buy TV's in colors other than black. TV companies please give us some color so that we can decorate our houses and apartments a little better!

The apps work really nice on this TV. The Wifi is pretty high speed because I can get high quality streaming videos on this without noticing any diminished quality. It works pretty much like any android phone so it's super easy to get anything on there that you already have on your phone. It's intuitive and works really well. There's no need for me to use my computer or gaming console to view streaming content anymore with the apps on this TV.

Overall, I really like the performance of this TV but I'm really disappointed that the main features aren't quite there yet. It's understandable why they rushed it and didn't have the firmware out yet. They need to get it out in time for the PS5 launch. Still this makes me worried about the PS5 when it comes out as it's probably going to need a lot of firmware updates as well. I have to give this TV an 8 out of 10. I'm confident that they will come out with the firmware because it's a flagship TV for their flagship game console.
