My Review of "Knock Knock"

When it seems too good to be true, it's obviously true.

Knock Knock is a 2015 movie that I'm not too sure how to categorize. It almost seems like it's supposed to be a horror movie but it's not necessarily scary. There's different elements that make it qualify as a horror movie though. I really liked the premise of this movie however it really faltered close to the end of the movie and there were a few missteps along the way as well.

The movie starts out innocently enough. Evan is this architect that lives pretty much the most idealistic life. He has a beautiful nuclear family where he has a beautiful loving wife and two wonderful children. Everyone seems to love each other and life is good. Even better, everyone is pretty much overachieving in this family as well. The kids are great kids. Evan's wife is a successful artist and Evan himself is a successful architect. They all even live in this idealistic modern mansion of a home.

As it turns out on father's day weekend the family has to go out to the beach without him. He has some deadlines he has to complete so he has to stay home to finish his work. He's stuck alone at home working and there's this horrific rain storm that sweeps the city. While he's steadfastly working away he hears a knock on the door.

When he opens the door he sees these beautiful young women drenched by the rain. They're looking for their friend's place. Apparently there's a party in the neighborhood and they were supposed to go there. One of them forgot their phone and the other one's phone is soaked and stopped working. It seems innocent enough.

To be fair Evan tried to shoo them away by saying he doesn't know the neighbors and he can't help them. They persisted asking him to use his computer to find out the location of the party. He eventually lets them in and allows them to dry off while he orders them an Uber to go home or to the party.

I'm not sure how Uber works but I'm pretty sure you have to input a destination address. This wasn't really addressed but that's besides the point of the movie. In fact there were a whole slew of weird things during that exchange that might have caught some red flags.

So the young women basically butter Evan up but being a happily married man, Evan continues to decline their flirtations. You can tell he's interested but knows it's a bad decision. Some of the reactions and banter between the two parties is actually kind of hilarious. It's so absurd that I was caught laughing pretty loud while watching it. I don't know if it was intentionally trying to be funny but I found it that way.

Eventually Evan succumbs to the demands of the young women and he would soon regret the choices that he made. One night of passion has changed his life forever. There are a number of things that happen that the ladies mention and Evan realizes he's not dealing with regular young ladies. The two that he's messed with are pretty nutso and that's pretty much the movie.

The acting for the most part is pretty good but there were some overreactions or weird reactions for the character of Evan. I thought some of it was a little off but it isn't totally all bad. It's just really uneven. Some of the reactions I really didn't buy and it made it somewhat comical. I'm not sure if it's the fault of the actor it's just weird from my point of view. It really took me out of the movie and at times made me laugh when I don't think the scenes were supposed to be comical.

There's also no explanations in this movie. The ending really drove me nuts because there's no real feeling of completeness. It seems like things just happen and you're screwed. Sort of like if you got mugged on the streets when there's rich people all around you. You understand that you got mugged and sort of why you got mugged but not fully. Something doesn't quite make sense and it's never explained. Why did they choose me and not the others even though the others would have been a better payday? This is the feeling I had when I got to the end of the movie. It really felt unsatisfying and I felt cheated.

Though I understand what the movie was trying to convey. It was basically a torture porn movie. How bad can you make Evan feel throughout the movie? How intense would it make the audience to put him in certain situations? It seemed to me that was the entire goal of this movie. They were trying to make the audience just watch this one character get tortured constantly. This isn't exactly my cup of tea but I understand why some people enjoy them.

Overall, this was definitely not a movie that I could watch over and over again. I did love the premise because the first half of the movie had me going and I absolutely loved it. Too bad it really faltered in the last half of the movie where there's no real resolution to the whole movie. I have to give this movie a 6 out of 10. I like the efforts made in this movie it's too bad that I couldn't enjoy the entire movie as much as I liked the first half.
