My Review of "Superman (2025)"
Wow, was this ever a fun ride. It had pretty much everything I was kind of hoping for.

Superman (2025) is the long awaited new Superman movie to come out since the last one in 2013 called Man of Steel. I was a big fan of that movie but I know that they're making big changes with the characters. It's funny how using the same characters and ideas the movies can be so drastically different from one another. Despite the differences, I was still able to enjoy this immensely.
The movie starts out with a little explanation of what's been going on in this universe. It's established that metahumans have existed for thousands of years on Earth so that's not strange for citizens. We also know that Superman is kind of still learning the ropes of his new responsibilities. After 3 years of being a superhero, he's finally tasted defeat.
As the worlds most powerful metahuman what could be so powerful to take him down. That's kind of the mystery of the whole movie that he has to figure out. It also helps if you've been keeping up with the previous DC movies like Suicide Squad and TV shows like Peacemaker and Creature Commandos. Fortunately, I did and I'm following along pretty well with what's going on. I'm pretty sure that you can get away with not seeing these shows to keep up. You get a better understanding of the universe behind Superman when you see these shows.
This world isn't a black and white world where you have good versus bad. There are gray lines that are intersecting the good deeds. The villains often play with the gray lines to stranglehold the heroes. In this case we have Superman who is being taken down by politics. All he wants to do is save as many lives as possible. This in turn becomes somewhat of a weakness for him. He has to think in different ways to defeat his foes because of this.
In the previous Superman movie, we kind of had a badass superhero that has no real weaknesses other than kryptonite. That makes him somewhat of an uninteresting character unless you have characters that are even more powerful. This then becomes an anime giant versus giant Kaiju match. That's not a terrible thing. A lot of people like that. I love those type of movies. This movie changes the script.
In this movie, Superman is exposed for his empathy for all things living. You even see it when he fights a giant monster. His comrades want to kill it. Despite the creature trying to destroy the world, Superman wants to save it for an intergalactic zoo or study it to make it at peace. He doesn't want anything to die. That makes for a more interesting character. It also makes it possible to center him as a main character of a movie. As a superbeing with barely any weaknesses in the past he was made as a side character. It's unfortunate because that's how it is for omnipotent characters. They aren't interesting enough for a full movie of their own unless it's a Kaiju fight.
Then again we do have a lot of characters in this movie. I don't know how they were able to build so many characters into this one small movie and still make it make sense. They're able to give us empathy for each of the characters as well. I even understood the grief of the main villain of this movie. In some ways it's a bit of a Salieri versus Mozart situation with Superman and the main villain. No matter how smart or great he is, the world will always love Superman more and this just gets on his nerves. I can get on board with that.
I also have to say that the special effects and sound stage is quite amazing in this movie. You have to see this in the big screen with big sound to truly appreciate the epic nature of this movie. It's wildly ambitious and you can really experience that in the theatre with a packed audience.
Overall, despite the fact that this movie was vastly different from the previous Superman movie, I had a lot of fun. This is an interesting take of the character and there are sprinkles of so much more fun to be had in the future. I will definitely watch this one again and recommend it to friends. This movie gets a 7.5 out of 10 for me.
