My Review of "Strange World"

A whimsical story that comes around rather preachy.

Strange World is Disney's latest animated feature film of 2022. They don't really do hand drawn animation anymore so it doesn't come as a shock that this one is 3d animated. It didn't do too well in the box office and that had me curious. I wasn't too sure why since a lot of their movies are quite formulaic and still do pretty well. What was it about this movie that people didn't like?

The movie starts out with the introduction of Jaeger. He's a tough no nonsense explorer looking for new places to check out. It's quite interesting since they introduce him in 2d artwork and then move him into three dimensional CGI through a montage of time. As the montage plays on we meet his son Searcher.

Of course Searcher is along the ride with his dad. The problem is that Searcher doesn't really want to be an explorer. He wants to do different things and it's quite apparent that he's different from his father from the very beginning.

One fateful exploration trip Searcher discovers some berries that emit electricity. He believes that these berries are the solution to their town's problems. Jaeger believes otherwise but he just wants to continue searching no matter what. The two headbutt and separate. Jaeger decides to continue on his solo adventure while Searcher brings the berries to their hometown.

Searcher was right and the berries revolutionizes the town. They now have electricity and become pretty high tech over 25 years. Now Searcher happily lives on a farm with his family. He now has a son named Ethan.

It seems Ethan doesn't really want to be a farmer but instead he wants to explore. Funny how things go cyclical in this movie. You can tell what their themes and main messages in this movie are before the movie really gets going. That's quite all right but in this movie they kind of hammer it into your head so you'll never forget.

This can feel quite preachy after a while and it really voids a lot of the fun that this movie could have been. We have father and son bickering constantly throughout the movie. People constantly talking over one another and it can get quite irritating.

The weird thing is that this movie technically still falls under the same formula that Disney has always used but this time it just doesn't feel right. The mascot character and the jokes don't seem to really gel in this movie. There are obviously other themed messages concerning the environment as well. Maybe it's because I keep seeing movies trying to convey the same messages over and over again and it finally got to me.

Don't get me wrong the movie is visually beautiful. They have some fun musical tracks as well. These were don't very well and I commend them for a lot of the imaginative art work that they did with this movie. Unfortunately the story didn't really work well with me and it felt very generic and tired.

They did have some good ideas that were brought up with this movie and it kind of felt like a lot of wasted potential. Maybe they wanted to put too much into this movie at the same time. Perhaps simplifying the movie a bit by focusing the attention to one particular story rather than multiple side stories like the generational gap thing would have helped this movie.

Overall, I really hate to say that I was bored at times with this movie. There were parts where I literally droned off and almost fell asleep. It's really unfortunate too because Disney has been on the decline with a lot of their features lately. I have to give this sad movie a 4 out of 10. Who else groaned when they noticed the turtle shape at the end of the movie?
