My Review of "School of Rock"

One of my favorite rewatchable movies. It's not perfect but it's perfect for me.

School of Rock is fun family movie that came out in 2003. I loved it the first time I saw it and every subsequent time that I've seen it. There's some sort of weird draw to to it that keeps me watching whenever it is on television. It's sort of like a warm comfortable blanket that keeps you warm during the winter days.

The movie starts off with a struggling band playing for a handful of people in a dank underground club. It's pretty obvious that no one is paying attention to them. Oblivious to this is Dewey. He's a die hard wannabe rock star. It's his dream but as he's getting older the message is still not hitting him. Dewey has a blind optimism that he will make it in the industry no matter what.

This all changes when he wakes up the next morning in the corner of his buddy's apartment. His Buddy, Ned, is a supply teacher. They used to be in a band together but Ned wised up. He realized that he can't be a rock star so instead went into education. Ned's girlfriend also happens to live with them but she's more authoritative in seeing the real world for what it is. Net is kind of in the neutral zone but finally has to choose sides.

An ultimatum has been made since Dewey has not been able to come up with money to help pay rent. Dewey has to raise money or risk being kicked out of the apartment. Since Dewey is so adamant about his dreams this is somewhat soul crushing.

One fateful morning a private prep school calls in to ask for Ned to supply for them. Dewey catches this call and decides to take the job in order to raise money for his side of the rent. Afterall, he believes it's just babysitting kids.

When he gets to the school he realizes that the kids have a lot more musical talent than he expected. Instead of teaching them their regular curriculum, he decides to make them into a band to win a rock competition called battle of the bands.

It's a fairly simple premise and quite a wacky one as well. This is very much geared as a family friendly movie sprinkled with a number of adult jokes. You'd think that a movie with a lot of child actors wouldn't be as entertaining as this is. Each of the kids do a great job in elevating this movie. They all have this real sense of growth among them. You want to cheer for all of the kids because each of them get a bit of spotlight to show us who they are.

Even the older characters have a sense of growth as well. I think every one of the characters, even minor characters, have some sort of evolution. They all learn something about themselves and the people around them. This is very much a community based movie where all of the characters are a character of it's own when they assemble.

If you're feeling down this is probably one of the best pick me up motivators to get your day going. It's a lighthearted movie that really brightens up your day with their charm and charisma. Whenever this movie is on, it has this weird magnetism that keeps me watching it no matter where the movie is.

Overall, this is one of my all time classics that I will go back to over and over again. I know it's not for everyone but there's this factor about this movie that has me coming back again. Surely others feel this as well because it is a fairly popular movie. I have to give this movie a 9 out of 10. A definite recommend and definite rewatch.
