Got Sequel: HBO Just Dropped a Massive Game of Thrones Update
Is Game of Thrones returning in 2026?

HBO and George R.R. Martin just decided to crack open the vault and dump an avalanche of updates about the entire Game of Thrones universe — shows, prequels, sequels, and yes… movies.
Apparently, “winter is coming” was not enough. Now we have sequels, revivals, rewrites, spinoffs, and page counts that may or may not mean anything.
And yes… George did talk about Winds of Winter.
(Everybody stay calm. Or don’t. Up to you.)
Let’s break down the madness.
HBO Wants Game of Thrones Sequels… Badly
So here’s the headline:
HBO isn’t just thinking about sequels — they’re actively developing multiple ones.
And the timing is hilarious because Kit Harington and Sophie Turner just dropped the trailer for their new project together.
Game of Thrones reunions inside of Game of Thrones reunions.
You truly cannot make this up.
The Jon Snow Sequel Is Back From the Dead
Yes, the allegedly “canceled” Jon Snow sequel is back on the table.
George R.R. Martin explained that he’s always resisted sequels because the ending of his books isn’t going to match the ending of the TV show.
He doesn’t want HBO accidentally canonizing a finale he doesn’t agree with.
And honestly? Same, George. Same.
But apparently Jon Snow is the “safest” character to pick up with because he’s way up north, far away from the messy political dominoes George still plans to knock over.
George R.R. Martin Confirms His Book Ending Is Way Bloodier
George casually dropped that his ending for A Dream of Spring was always going to look very different — and much messier — than what the show delivered.
He straight up said:
- Tyrion is not getting a happy ending
- Sansa originally died in his outline
- The show ended too cleanly
- His version is going to be brutal
But George admits Sophie Turner’s performance might’ve saved Sansa’s life.
Keyword: might.
The man loves keeping us stressed.
The Original Jon Snow Sequel Was Apparently the Saddest Thing Ever
This is where things get wild.
Kit Harington brought HBO a fully developed pitch he made with a writer outside HBO. And according to the interview, his idea was… well… bleak.
Like… existential dread bleak.
Kit’s Jon Snow sequel included:
- Jon living alone beyond the Wall
- PTSD spirals
- Ghost chased away
- Longclaw thrown aside
- Jon building cabins only to burn them down
- ZERO hero moments
- And yes… Jon Snow dying at the end
Basically, “Game of Thrones but make it depression.”
HBO’s reaction?
Absolutely not.
So they shelved it and hired a new writer to restart the entire thing from scratch.
Arya’s Sequel Is Also in Development — With a Twist
HBO also acknowledged the long-rumored Arya sequel is in development, but they’re changing direction from what the series finale implied.
Instead of exploring the mysterious western continent — the one nobody has returned from — HBO is considering rerouting Arya’s journey back toward Essos early in the series.
Why?
Because Essos is already built out, established, and full of lore.
Also, Arya stabbing her way across Essos just… fits.
HBO Is Debating Whether Aegon’s Conquest Should Be a Movie or Series
This is a big one.
HBO is debating whether Aegon’s Conquest should be:
- a massive Dune-style movie
OR
- a prestige TV series
Both options are still in play.
Both would print money.
We’ll see which way they go.
George R.R. Martin Gives a Winds of Winter Update (Kind Of)
George revealed he’s over 1,000 pages into Winds of Winter.
That’s more than A Dance with Dragons — his longest book so far.
Before you celebrate:
Page count does not equal release date.
We have learned this the hard way.
But hey — progress is progress.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Big Updates, More Seasons Confirmed
This one is major for Dunk & Egg fans.
George confirmed:
- 2 new Dunk & Egg novellas are basically finished
- HBO already has three seasons greenlit
- Season 2 is filming now
- Season 3 will film almost immediately after
And unlike the original Game of Thrones showrunners — who had almost no guidance after they passed the books — Ira Parker now has full outlines for the next 10 Dunk & Egg stories.
Meaning the adaptation will finally have a roadmap.
Preparing for the Tragedy at Summerhall
George says the Dunk & Egg timeline will stretch all the way to:
- The Tragedy at Summerhall
- The birth of Rhaegar Targaryen
Which means by Seasons 5 or 6, we are heading straight into some of the most dramatic events in Targaryen history.
And yes, this is 100% going to break the fandom in half.
The Next Two Dunk & Egg Stories Coming Soon
The next finished novellas are:
1. The She-Wolves of Winterfell
Stark succession drama + Stark widows fighting for power =
basically “House of the Dragon but make it Winterfell.”
2. A hero of the Riverlands / Penny Tree story
This one dives into the Bracken and Blackwood feud, which House of the Dragon already explored.
A perfect continuation.
George R.R. Martin Is Still Mad at House of the Dragon
George spent a chunk of the interview taking shots at House of the Dragon again.
Not because of Rhaenyra or Alicent changes — those aren’t his issue.
He’s mostly angry about:
- certain missing characters
- certain omitted side plots
- long-term consequences the show erased
He insists these characters later affect big events, and their absence breaks parts of the story.
Meanwhile, Ryan Condal is planning to end the show with Season 4 — not Season 5.
What Happens Next?
HBO says we’ll get:
- More Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episodes soon
- More House of the Dragon Season 3 footage
- More sequel announcements over the next year
So buckle up — the Thrones universe is expanding again whether we’re ready or not.
Final Thoughts — Which Spinoff Do You Want?
Do you want:
- a Jon Snow sequel (but not the depressing version)?
- an Arya return to Essos?
- Aegon’s Conquest as a blockbuster movie?
- more Dunk & Egg seasons ASAP?
Drop your reactions and theories below.
More Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon content is coming — so stay tuned, because HBO is clearly just getting started.
