My Review of "Promising Young Woman"
Who would have thought this movie was going to be so suspenseful?

Promising Young Woman is a movie that I heard through the grapevine but never seen that much coverage in media. It's a little surprising since there are quite a lot of bigger actors in this movie. I went into the movie with very little knowledge of the movie and to be honest that's the best way to watch it. The less you know the better because the suspenseful scenes will be that much more impactful. There are twists and turns in this windy road that you want to get lost in.
The movie starts off very mysteriously. We see a bunch of males in a bar congregating doing the usual male braggadocio thing that they do in bars. Already I had a sense of what was going to come up but I was curious how they were going to pull it off.
These fellas see a very drunk female in a booth looking for something. She's obviously very out of it and all alone so one of the fellows there is coaxed into talking to her. He comes up to her to see what's going on and tries to help her out.
She's lost her phone and needs to go back home. Trying to be a nice guy the man offers her a lift to her house. It plays innocently enough and the guy seems okay at first however when it gets closer to his house the plans change. He decides to ask her up to his apartment and then we start to see what's really going to happen.
There's a bit of a twist that I won't spoil here but you can kind of guess what's going to happen. This drunken girl isn't so drunk and her name is Cassandra. She's does this a lot. She lures men from bars and makes them pay for trying to take advantage of her. At first you think it's just for kicks but as the movie progresses you realize there's meaning behind it.
Ultimately this movie is pretty much a revenge movie for Cassandra. There's a huge story to this movie that is slowly revealed so you'll be rest assured that the story will open up eventually.
I have to say that I loved the twists and turns that this movie throws at you. Cassandra is a brilliant woman and she comes into all of these schemes with a big plan without you knowing she has a plan. I find it pretty cool that everyone is really afraid of her when she turns on the crazy switch.
My only gripe about the story is that she's a lone woman doing this in what looks like a small town. How do people not really recognize her when she's going to the same bar and meeting up with the same people? I'm sure not a lot of people look exactly like her so it's a pretty hard pill to swallow that people never really recognize her. Then again it's one of those things that is part of the movie. The message was about how she wasn't noticed for most of her life and partly because she was a nerdy girl.
What's even more impressive is that this movie isn't so graphic but you can still feel the pain of some of the characters. It's very nicely directed where you don't have to see the carnage and destruction to know that it exists. It very much feels like an independent movie and a very well constructed one. They didn't need to do any big effects or flashbacks to help explain the story. Everything is pretty clear and concise with very good pacing.
At no parts of this movie was I wandering off. I was glued to the movie from start to finish because of the unpredictable nature of the characters and the charisma of Cassandra. I just wanted to see her succeed even though some of the things that she'll be doing can eventually ruin people's lives.
Overall, I would say I had a fantastic time and couldn't give this movie enough praises. If you haven't seen it then I would say what are you waiting for? It's so good! I have to give this movie a 9 out of 10. It is possibly one of the best movies I've seen this year even though it technically came out in 2020. I will be enthusiastically recommending this movie to all of my friends because this movie deserves a lot more attention than it has right now.
