My Review of "Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space"

The crazy conclusion of the Mobile Suit Gundam trilogy has a lot to offer if you kept up with the series.

Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space is the third film of the trilogy Gundam movies. It's just as long as the previous two movies but a no holds barred version. What I mean by that is that this movie has a ton of twists and turns that you might not have expected the series to go. The first two Gundam movies established a lot of lore that this movie relishes in throwing back at you.

The movie starts off pretty much exactly after the second movie. The earth federation is now starting to take new type humanoids much more seriously. There's no coincidence that white base has been doing so well. They definitely are a crew of new types.

In the previous movies they started exploring the rumor that there could be individuals that have a heightened sense of precognition and abilities. The first movie didn't really talk too much about it but there are talks in the second movie. The second movie pretty much had rumors circling around that there might be a new evolution in humankind called the new type. This hypothesis became conclusive by the end of the second movie.

To benefit off the white base's new type crew, the earth federation classes them as a decoy unit. They want to put white base in the front line so that the Zeon forces will go after them. It's totally not fair but even the crew of white base has to start wondering how they're so good at fighting off Zeon forces.

The main character Amuro is still reluctant to accept that he is in fact a new type. That is until he meets a mysterious girl named Lalah. Unbeknownst to him Lalah actually works for Char his mortal enemy. The connection that Amuro has with Lalah is very different as Lalah is one of the highest forms of new types.

They pit the enemies against each other but they still have a respect of each other much like how you would see Professor X and Magneto of the X-Men. They understand where each of them are thinking but believe in their own causes. Their egos get the better of them in each of their encounters.

I would have thought that they would have used Char's sister Sayla a little more in this movie but it seems like she plays a very minor role. It's too bad because the brother/sister dynamic is quite interesting and I don't think that they properly utilized that storyline. Sayla being on the federation side and Char fighting on with the Zeon forces had tons of untapped potential.

However it would have taken away from Char's true plan. This ultimate plan of Char's is finally revealed by the end of this movie and you now understand why he did the things that he did throughout the trilogy. It shows how much of a tactical cunning and brilliant character he really is.

The last act of this movie is pure chaotic because there's so much happening in so many good ways. Drama coming at you in all directions. It's a little overwhelming at first but in a way where you kind of want more. If you stuck it out with the previous two movies you are going to be delighted with this last movie.

Although this movie has a full on conclusion you kind of want to know what happens to the crew after the movie ends. I have a feeling I'm going to have to look around to understand which Gundam movie I'll have to watch next after this one. It is after all a 40 year old series.

Overall, I had a blast with this movie. You definitely have to see the first two movies to understand and appreciate what happens in this movie though. It's sort of like a Lord of the Rings where you can't just start on the third movie of the trilogy. There's too much information you'll miss out on to understand the context of what they're talking about. I have to give this movie a 7.5 out of 10. It's a very long series but if you stick it out this movie will be your reward.
