My Review of "Love Hurts"

This feels like a high school kid threw things on the wall and they tried to make a comprehendible made a movie out of it.

Love Hurts is sort of a romantic comedy that came out just before Valentine's day this year. I think the only thing it's got going for it is the star power they have in the cast. It wants to be so many things but never really focusing on what it really should be. The movie is disjointed and not really funny for a comedy.

The movie starts off with the introduction of Marvin. He's a mild mannered real estate agent who happens to be really good at his job. Marvin also happens to be very motivated and keen to please others.

In the meantime, we notice someone is defacing a ton of his realtor posters. That doesn't matter to him because life is going well. He's recently getting acknowledged for his accomplishments at his job. Of course all things have to come to an end in order to have a movie.

We immediately have our first hired killer after him. You see Marvin is living a double life. He's hiding from his past. The past is creeping back into his life when he receives a mysterious valentines card. This mysterious person basically brought all the skeletons back out of his closet. His past is so dastardly that it will forever ruin his current life.

It's a simple plot but it focuses on a lot of weird things. We have side stories with the goons hired to kill Marvin. This is sort of made to work the way Bullet Train did theirs but it doesn't quite work. At least in bullet train, there the banter was somewhat comical. The jokes would work if you didn't see where they're going a mile away. A lot of it was quite predictable and quite cliche.

I mentioned earlier that it was the cast that has the star power that brings the people to watch this movie. That is true but they're kind of miscast. Although I love Ke Huy Quan, I found he was way too old to be playing this role. That's a bit of a quandary because he's the reason why I came to watch this movie in the first place.

It felt really weird seeing this 60 year old man still able to take down these people that are way larger than him and half his age. Meanwhile, he's got this beautiful girl half his age that seems to be totally in love with him. Yes, I know this is fantasy and none of the fighting makes sense but even the love portion doesn't feel quite right. The romantic chemistry wasn't there and the end part is quite awkward and cringy.

This movie also plays upon the fact that they have these famous individuals in their movie. They will try to pull on our nostalgia with pairing our Goonies stars together but never really push that envelope. I kind of wished they pushed it a little further since they were already there. Even having Marshawn Lynch as one of the goons was something they used. They used his catchphrase and the fact he was a football player.

I could tell they did everything in their power to make this an entertaining movie for the audience. Well, except one thing. They didn't focus on the story and how to edit the movie to focus on the movie rather than the elements in the movie.

Overall, I was very disappointed with this movie. It doesn't even feel like a movie. In some ways it feels like a video that a high school kid put together because they thought putting these cool things together would be entertaining. Sure it was entertaining to them but for a general audience, I don't think it was. That's why I have to give this one a 4 out of 10.
