My Review of "Here Comes the Boom"

One of the better Happy Madison movies that came out back in the day.

Here Comes the Boom is a comedy that came out back in 2012. It's one of the better Happy Madison movies that came out. They're usually hit or miss. These sort of movies have somewhat of a formula to them so you kind of know where this movie is going. Still the way they pulled this movie off makes it stand out from the pack.

The movie starts out with the main protagonist Scott. He's used to be a wrestler back in the day but now he's a high school teacher. Ten years ago he was a highly motivated teacher at the school but somehow through the years he's become disenfranchised and totally lost his motivation. Now he's doing the bare minimum at work and not even showing up on time.

With every movie, we have to have further stumbling blocks. This time the school is going through yet another budget cut. They have decided to cut out the music department. Their music teacher, Marty, is a very dedicated professor and it would be a shame to lose him.

Seeing Marty going through such struggles, Scott decides to stick up for Marty. He wants to help save the music department. The problem is that he doesn't really have a plan to save it. Through a series of coincidental occurrences, Scott discovers a method to save the department.

He decides to join in on some underground mixed martial arts competitions. Even if he loses he still makes some money of the situation. Since he was pretty good at wrestling in his past, he thinks he's able to make enough to save the department at least.

This movie then goes into a bit of a metamorphosis. It soon becomes a bit like Rocky but with some really wacky scenarios. The movie is kind of a mix between the traditional dance movie tropes with Rocky. I know it was cheesy but they still delivered it pretty well.

I like how the kids were rallying behind Scott and how Scott was rediscovering his passion for teaching. I also liked the somewhat realistic approach to the underground scene of mixed martial arts.

The pacing was pretty on point throughout the movie except for the ending. I thought that they rushed that a bit and made it a little too convenient. Then again this is somewhat the norm when it comes to Happy Madison movies.

While watching this movie you're not going to see this as a masterpiece of a movie. It is meant to be a silly popcorn movie. There are a few laughs throughout this movie but it is mostly a feel good movie. You want to see this underdog rise to the occasion to motivate his kids. They did a good job with his progression in the sport.

Each of the cast does a good job in bringing some joy to each of the scenes. None of it can be taken seriously. Even the serious scenes have you questioning when the joke is coming in. They all seem to be having a great time on set and it shows on film. Again, that's par for the course with Happy Madison movies.

Overall, this is very much a Happy Madison product because it fits the bill for all of their cliches yet some how this worked better than their other outings. I felt that this movie kind of stands out in a sea of Happy Madison generic movies even if it follows the same formula. I had a good time but I don't know if everyone would be able to handle the cheesiness of it all. I still have to give this one at least a 6.5 out of 10.
