1.5/5 - Can we stop with this 'Deadpool' nonsense already?

I saw this film on the night of Thursday 15th August, the review was written the following morning.

I know what you're thinking: I'm not sure this film is for you, Annie. I'm scared you'll be mad. I'm not mad though. I'm bored. If I said it whilst watching the first and second movies in the Deadpool franchise, then I'll say it after this one as well: I'll die a happy woman if I never see Deadpool again. You best believe that I was only seated in that theatre for Wolverine: a legend of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie had some good, albeit drawn-out action sequences and the corny humour of Deadpool had not softened in the slightest. A mixture between the comedic values of Jackass without any of the charisma of Johnny Knoxville, mixed with the incessant bleating high-pitched squeal which I found to be simply the voice of Ryan Reynolds - this movie was only good because of Hugh Jackman and the cameos - one of which includes the Godfather of the Marvel Universe.

Let's not take you through the story as that would kind of spoil the movie for you. Instead, I'm going to invite you into my own opinions on the film which may appear out of order, but at least it doesn't ruin the film. I'm going to leave out spoilers, I'm going to not comment on every cameo as you may want to actually watch this movie and discover them for yourself.

Let's start off kind: a huge advantage of this movie was Wolverine. Okay, kindness over. A huge disadvantage of this movie was Deadpool. I'm not going to lie, I like the character of the Deadpool - in the comics. But I feel like his translation on to the screen is rather obnoxious and low-brow. As I have already mentioned the name Johnny Knoxville in my review, I'm going to say this in a review (which is something I said out loud a while back, I believe whilst watching the first movie int he franchise), Knoxville would have made a better Deadpool. For some reason, there is something about Ryan Reynolds' persona on screen which is simply intolerable. Is it funny? No. Is it annoying? Very. After a while, the routine, like a post-2020s episode of Saturday Night Live, becomes tired and unfulfilling.

The story more than often didn't make much sense and wouldn't make sense unless you had already seen the Loki TV Show. Again, I'll be honest, Loki Season One was brilliant and I ate it up. But it took all of my strength to get through Season Two, which was when I vowed never to watch a Marvel TV Show ever again. I think Deadpool and Wolverine simply depended on the viewer knowing too many things about the MCU and the TVA. If you don't know what that last thing is then well, you're going to be in for a surprise when you watch the film because that is what it is all about. Unless you'd seen Jonathan Majors underwhelming and rather pathetic performance as Kang (whose timeline has now been cut from existence) (P.S: thank you to Michael B Jordan for not putting yourself forward for the role of Kang. As you can tell, I'm being sarcastic. Why he didn't put himself forward, I will never know) then you won't have a clue what is going on for most of this new movie.

Deadpool's humour is tired, the story didn't make sense and Ryan Reynolds is absolutely unbearable. But at least we have Wolverine. Well we have a Wolverine. There are many Wolverines. This is something about the film I actually found quite funny. I enjoy seeing Deadpool get the living daylights beaten out of him by Wolverines. I'm not going to say too much about this but it's the best part of the movie apart from when Hugh Jackman makes that joke about taking off Deadpool's head. There’s this whole thing about that being the only way Deadpool can die. I’m not going to lie but if that’s the only way he can die then we are going to be here for a very long time and I hate that.

Altogether, whilst this movie had some good points, I think that Deadpool has had a good run and deserves to end here. I know it won't because Marvel fanboys think he's the best thing since Tyler Durden. He's a character who most normal people find extremely annoying only because of his obnoxious attitude. I think that maybe, if they ended it with a trilogy they could avoid it becoming a cariacture of itself. But there is a creeping feeling inside of me that it is much too late for that.
