Moon Knight #2

Marvel Comics 2021

Written by Jed MacKay

Illustrated by Alessandro Cappuccino

Coloured by Rachelle Rosenberg

Lettered by VC’s Cory Petit

Moon Knight has established his territory, and the people within it are under the protection of his Midnight Mission. But what happens when those very people are turned into weapons against him? When gangs of elderly residents leave a trail of bizarre violence, Moon Knight must put his body, mind and very soul on the line to get to the bottom of it.

Oh this just takes everything we’ve seen about Moon Knight and uses that as its base and moves forward from what happened when he tried to take out Mephisto and Khonshu. There are things we see during this issue that I am seeing for the first time in my life of reading the characters exploits. It is exciting to see a character having this much tribute to his past while expanding on his present and into the future. This is precisely what we are supposed to see out of comics and to see it done with such care and precision is what makes this book, even at only its second issue, be held in high regard.

I am an absolutely huge fan of the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter as this fleshes the characters out even further. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing more and more of the story we see new aspects of the character come to life and it just excites the reader in some wonderful ways.

I greatly appreciate the way that we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen. I love seeing the different avenues of this story being explored as they are. Whether it's Marc, Reese or the man watching Marc these avenues add some great depth, dimension and complexity to the story. Again I’m going to use the word exciting in describing how these come across. The way everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is immaculately achieved.

The interiors here are very stylised and the linework and its varying weights and techniques being utilised to create the detail work we see throughout the book is rendered extremely well. The backgrounds utilised are fairly simple and I really wish we’d see a lot more detailed work in them. As it stands the way we see the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story as seen within the composition of the panels. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a talented eye for storytelling. The colour work is brilliantly rendered thanks to the light sources and sheer brilliance of the whites we see. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is expertly rendered.

There is something fresh, fun, new and interesting happening within these pages. This is unlike anything else Marvel is putting out on stands and I hold it in such high regards alongside The Eternals, the new Kang series and Gamma Flight as some of the company’s most innovative storytelling. With some amazingly complex storytelling and dynamic and unexpected characterisation alongside these highly creepy and stylised interiors Moon knight’s newest incarnation is one you need to keep your eye on moving forward.
