Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim
Review

Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim was one of the most anticipated films for nerds this year. I love Lord of the Rings and am always craving stories from middle earth. I don’t care if they are good or not, I just want them. So I personally was very excited about this movie. I was also just really excited to get another LotR animated movie. There is just so much you can do with animation and Lord of the Rings is just the perfect backdrop for it.
Right off the bat the animation is beautiful. You can see the layers in the art. It feels very old school. The lines and such are very reminiscent of the original animated Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies. It’s truly beautiful to look at. The details in the costumes and the building especially are gorgeous.
Music has always been an important part of Lord of the Rings and Middle Earth so I love that we are opening with a song.
I love this first confrontation, the king just used Middle Earth speak to say “Let’s take this outside”. I also very much hate Wulf, he sucks. The way he grabbed Héra makes me want to punch him. The king killed this guy with one punch, what a little bitch. Don’t instigate a fight if you can’t take a punch.
Time passes…but in the Middle Earth way. So we don’t get a tag telling us how many years later, we get “seasons passed”.
Héra is super badass, I love having another awesome Middle Earth woman to obsess over. They just make my heart so happy. She’s so smart. I love that she lured a rabbit creature to a bigger, badder creature so that she didn’t have to deal with it.
My sweet girl is captured by the guards that were exiled with Wulf. So obviously they are capturing her on his orders. He is now High Lord of the wildmen. They have occupied Isengaurd. So we are seeing very familiar landmarks and hearing familiar names. I think this is very much a decent start point for people who have never seen Lord of the Rings. 12 hours of movies is a lot, but an animated film that takes place in the same universe might be a great entrance point to Middle Earth.
Olwyn is pretty badass too, loving that for me. The women in Lord of the Rings are so unhinged, like they are actually crazy and I love them so much.
I also love that we are being consistent with the beef between Gondor and Rohan, because…humans. The king of Rohan is too proud to call on Gondor for help.
The king’s strategic brain isn’t really all there. How did they not know something was off when dude wasn’t where he was supposed to be with his army? If something bad happens to one of these boys I am going to scream.
I'm fully in love with Héra. That’s my girl, she is amazing.
NOOOOOO. Okay, my common sense knew that one of these sweet boys was going to die but I am still very upset. Actually I am completely devastated. And then the younger brother dies and I am so mad at that old, stupid horse. FUCK. Yeah this definitely feels like a Lord of the Rings film.
Look…this is Middle Earth, where people are often given titles based on what they are known for. If I am going up against a guy called HAMMERHAND, I’m probably not gonna fight him one on one. This really could have all been avoided had Fruca shown some shred of common sense.
This story centers on the humans of Middle Earth but we very much still get to see some creatures; Like orcs and Mûmakil. I think this gives the story a nice balance as well as making the story feel more real for the people who know Lord of the Rings.
Her riding out in the wedding dress is some petty, phycological shit and I LOVE that for her. Her choking him out with the shield is so badass. God I love her so much. Guys this movie is really good.
I love anything that takes place in Middle Earth, but genuinely this was such a well crafted film. Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim really captured the beauty and magic of Middle Earth. From a Rohanian king being too proud to call on Gondor for aid, to a young woman breaking just all the rules to follow what she believes in. It was very consistent with what we have seen from this universe, without being too repetitive. There is plenty of originality in this story and at the same time, if it feels comfortable and familiar. 10/10, will be showing it to everyone I know.
