Cops, Mystics, and Steampunk
One is often told not to judge a book by its cover. Yet when it comes to The Precinct, however, that was precisely what caught my attention. Perhaps that it isn't surprising given it is a graphic novel and that it was the combination of its artwork of a late nineteenth-century policeman with a mechanical arm with a woman wearing a vaguely Victorian yet mystic outfit along with the book being given the subtitle “A Steampunk Adventure.” Intrigued and one library checking out later, the results were definitely fun, to say the least.

From the very first moment that Lucy Mirando (the incomparable chameleon that is Tilda Swinton) started down the stairs of the building that her grandfather had owned in her 6 inch pumps, bleach blonde bob, hot pink lipstick, and for an added quirk –– braces, you knew that "Okja" was going to be good.

The Girl King Review
The period drama The Girl King , directed by Mika Kaurismäki, is an intriguing concept. It tells the story of the young tomboy Kristina who inherits Sweden upon her father's death in the 1600s. As queen, she pushes for change, threatening everything the country has been working toward until then. As a woman, she refuses all proposals for personal as well as political reasons. She knows that as soon as she is wed her power will transfer to her husband and her plans for the country will unravel. Kristina also finds herself infatuated with an engaged countess. Unsurprisingly, she is met with opposition for her ideals of knowledge and peace and her refusal to produce an heir. What the plot boils down to is Kristina's obsession with control.

Pink "#FailingBeautifully" At Parenthood
Known for hits like "So What" and "Raise Your Glass," songs which have traditionally encouraged and even celebrated the fierceness of women everywhere, if not everyone's inner party animal, Pink may have once been the last person on Earth that people would have expected to become a role model for working moms. Sure, the rock star has enough money now that she could probably hire several different nannies to look after her two young children, Willow, who's 6, and Jameson, who is around 6 months old now, but it would seem she's still a very present parent in their lives.

Stunningly Awful 'Blind' May Be Worst of the Year Candidate
In nearly 20 years as a film critic, I have seen more than my share of terrible movies. I have seen The Room without the Rifftrax commentary track. I sat all the way through The Happening with my mind reeling at the incompetence of M. Night shyamalan’s most incomprehensible work. And I have seen all the Transformers movies which should qualify me for some sort of movie critic combat pay. But in nearly 20 years I can genuinely say I have never seen anything quite like Blind.

A Double Feature
The Beguiled is a remake of a 1971 film of the same name starring Clint Eastwood, in turn based on A Painted Devil, a 1966 novel by Thomas P. Cullinan. My dad rented the original film when he read that a remake was in the works. I enjoyed the movie and its 2017 update was on my list of must-watch movies of the summer especially because it had a great cast and I was sold on the idea of blonde haired southern belles in pretty, pastel dresses, tormenting a helpless man. I was originally hoping to do a double feature of The Beguiled with My Cousin Rachel, as they are both atmospheric period pieces dealing with suspicion and sexual tension.

Can Netflix's 'Castlevania' Break Dracula's Curse?
Netflix is taking a big gamble on their next project. Bram Stoker's Dracula and pretty much any video game adaptation have one thing in common, when it comes to adapting them for the screen, large or small. They're both subject to audiences with a love for the original content and that means any new adaptation has to get by steadfast fans if it's going to be a success.
