On the CBS soap, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS the late Jeannie Cooper's character Katherine Chancellor reigned supreme in Genoa City. As the Grande Dame, she had money, prestige, ran her own company, and had 5 husbanda. They were: Gary Reynolds who was never on the show. (1948-1954) Phillip Chancellor II (1961-1975) Derek Thurston (1978-1981) Rex Sterling (1988-1990, 1992-1994), and Patrick Murphy (2009-2013). After Cooper passed away, her character was also killed off and her beloved Murphy left Genoa City and was written out of the show. He did return one year later for the anniversary episode of Kay Chancellor's death.

Many fans of the CBS soap were upset because they had fallen in love with Kay's last spouse. They enjoyed the chemistry between the two and loved seeing Murphy as a member of Genoa City. Some viewers of THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS thought perhaps Katherine's widower might find a new love interest and stick around but he did not. Patrick Murphy first surfaced in 2008 at Joe's Diner and was a longtime friend of Katherine look-alike, Marge. A lot of time was spent with Jeannie Cooper playing both roles but eventually, Marge was gone and Katherine and Murphy got on with their lives.

Michael Fairman returned to THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS from March 1-3 2017 after receiving a call from Esther Valentine. The character was also seen during a flashback scene in December 2020. Murphy's portrayer was born on February 25, 1934, has a wife named Joy Grayson and they have 2 children, Jeremy and Skye. There is no indication, however, that the actor is related to the man who does Michael Fairman TV. This Michael Fairman is a former member of the Church of Scientology and after leaving the organization in 2011 the church branded him as a suppressive person which suggests that in their opinion he is anti-social.

Fairman joined the Air Force at a young age and during that time became involved with a theater group. He has been an off-Broadway professional actor since the age of 31. Michael Fairman may look familiar because he enjoyed a pretty impressive career prior to joining the popular CBS soap. He was steadily employed in his craft for decades and portrayed Nick Szabo on the daytime drama, RYANS HOPE. He also had a recurring role on CAGNEY AND LACY as Department Inspector Knelman.

Some of his many other television credits include: MCCKLAIN'S LAW, EIGHT IS ENOUGH, BARNABY JONES, CHARLIE'S ANGELS, REMINGTON STEELE, 21 JUMP STREET, SUNSET BEACH, THE X-FILES, CHEERS, QUANTUM LEAP, MAD ABOUT YOU and DYNASTY. Fairman was also in WKRP IN CINCINNATI and wrote 5 episodes of the show, He also had a role in the Netflix drama THE SONS OF ANARCHY. (2008-2014).

In 2005, Fairman had the role of Sterling Grimes in the television movie ORDINARY MIRACLES which co-starred one of his Y&R castmates. The character of David Woodbury was portrayed by Corbin Bernsen who was Father Todd Williams the brother of Paul Williams. Bernsen is also the son of Jeannie Cooper who portrayed Fairman's wife Katherine Chancellor on the soap.

On THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, during much of the time Murphy was with Kay Chancellor, there was controversy regarding whether or not she was herself or Marge the waitress. The confusion ended permanently after Marge was finally declared dead and gone never to return. Murphy came back from a massive stroke and he and Kay lived a decent life until Jeannie Cooper passed away. Patrick Murphy was a simple man and did not allow his wife's vast fortune to overwhelm him. He and his portrayer will always be remembered by Y&R fans.
