If You Liked The Devil Wears Prada, then you'll love Emily in Paris!

Go from Prada to Paris!

By Heather Mitchell ManheimPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

If you liked the movie The Devil Wears Prada (2006), you would really enjoy the Netflix show Emily In Paris. The first season of Emily is complete, and a second season is set to air.

There are many similarities, but both the movie and the show carry their own personality and storyline. In The Devil Wears Prada, Anne Hathaway's character, Andy, must deal with an outrageously mean and demanding boss at a prominent New York City fashion magazine. There is also reluctance among Andy's new coworkers to accept her, and she struggles to fit in. Andy must also get used to a new way of life, switching out the generic flats she wears for Christian Louboutin red-soled heels and thick cotton skirts for frilly frocks. Andy must also decide what is really important to her. Will she place more value on the relationships with her family, boyfriend, and friends, or this exciting new career that can open many doorways for her professionally?

In Emily in Paris, Lily Collins plays Emily, who works at a prestigious marketing firm. The show opens with Emily's boss discovering she is pregnant and, therefore, will not accept her promotion to Paris. In her stead, Emily takes the job without knowing French or anybody in Paris. When she arrives in the City of Lights, she is ostracized by her critical boss and coworkers. Emily struggles to fit into a new culture as she learns a new language. Emily also must decide if her new job is worth losing the relationship with her boyfriend. A difference that Emily has over Devil is that she focuses on social media's role in her life. Where that was less significant in 2006 when Devil Wears Prada came out, in 2020, Emily is fully immersed in social media. We see her texting, placing video calls, and updating her Instagram on a split-screen – not throughout the entire show, as that would be tiring. Still, occasionally, we get a real glimpse into what her social media life looks like.

Other differences include in The Devil Wears Prada, Andy decides ultimately, she can't lead this hectic life and does not want to betray or backstab anyone to get to the top. She also decides that the relationship with her boyfriend is worth fighting for. In Emily in Paris, Emily chooses to keep going at her career with a relentlessly positive attitude, never really changing who she is. Emily decides to win everyone over with creative ideas, positivity, friendliness, and determination. Emily also chooses to give up the relationship with her boyfriend, as he does not want her to continue on the career path she is on.

However, one prevailing theme throughout these movies and shows is that there isn't a clear path to success. They are bumps in the road and things that seem impossible, but both ladies put their minds to it and find their success.

Another common thread between these two entertainment choices is they both have powerful female leads. Not only do these women achieve great things, but they do it without the help of a man. That's not to say men do not play an essential role in either of these, but the women can and do rely on their own strength, ingenuity, and intelligence.

Other enjoyable movie choices that include strong women are Captain Marvel (2019), Wonder Woman (2017), Hidden Figures (2016), and Legally Blonde (2001). Other television shows are The Marvelous Ms. Maisel and The Queen's Gambit. While they all have different genres, they all share the common theme of powerful women. Some are powerful physically, while some are mentally, but they achieve great things. Again, those achievements are not without trials, but these women overcome whatever obstacle may be in their way.

For too long in entertainment, women have been relegated to the fainting couch when they are capable of much more. It's not to say that there are not moments of doubt or fear, but these tough ladies show that they can conquer the problems themselves. Andy and Emily are two great examples of women in entertainment who did not let anything stand in their way of accomplishing their dreams.
