It's been close to three months since the country has been on a lock down and "stay at home" orders have been issued across the country and while some of us have picked up new hobbies, finally started that project we've been talking about, baking like our life depends on it. Some of us, like myself, have been taking the time to finally slow down and just catch up on shows, books, and just much needed sleep. So here is my short list of great shows ICYMI

Review of Waco - Netflix

Waco is a 6 part mini series which follows David Koresh, portrayed by Taylor Kitsch, the leader of what one would call a cult by todays standards, the Branch Davidians during a nearly 2 month standoff with the FBI & ATF

Based on the true events that occurred in Waco, Texas in 1993, Waco gives us the point of view of both the Branch Davidians and Federal Law Enforcement. Calling this an emotional roller coster would be an understatement. The show opens up giving us a glimpse into David and his followers,  David believing he’s a prophet of God has built a home and following of over 40 people. Living off the land and following the word of David, which in turn is the word of God, we soon learn everything isn’t rainbows in the world of Branch Davidians.

Throughout the series you can’t help but grow sympathetic for David, this isn’t a story of good guys vs bad guys. This is simply a story of a man fighting for his rights to believe in what he wants to believe and teach. Even if you don't agree with David's views, and trust me there's a few things that will have you questioning if everything is all there with David, but you still just want to hear the guy out.

Waco is an emotional roller coster packed into 6 episodes that will leave you spiraling.

Review of Defending Jacob - Apple TV

“ What would you if your child was a murder suspect?” This is the question that Defending Jacob makes you ask yourself as this murder mystery unfolds. Now I'll admit, seeing the line up for Apple Tv's original series left me less than impressed. Asides a Bird Box esque show and a show about a nanny babysitting a doll, but when I saw the trailer for this show I couldn't help but wonder what was this about? Who the hell is Jacob? And most importantly, did he do it?

Based on the book of the same name by William Landy, DJ follows Andy Barber (portrayed by Chris Evans) and his wife Laurie Barber (portrayed by Michelle Dockery)as their son Jacob (portrayed by Jaeden Martell) becomes the prime suspect in the murder of his 15 year old classmate Ben. Andy being Assistant District Attorney, complicates matters and we see how the suspicion surrounding the Barber family creates tension in their small community and in their home. From uncomfortable stares, social media bullying, and vandalism, the Barbers become subject to all kinds of scrutiny during the events of the show. Even internal family secrets are laid bare in the short thriller.

What I loved most and I think is Defending Jacobs shining moment, is that us as the viewer know as much as the characters themselves. The show gives us a "fly on the wall" perspective as we to watch along trying to figure out who killed Ben. While the season finally literally had me on the edge of my seat, Defending Jacob delivered a great story in 8 perfectly executed episodes. This is defiantly on my re watch list as I feel I may have missed some crucial details.

If you're a fan of 13 Reasons Why, minus the teenage angst and high school drama ( from the parents perspective basically) You'll love Defending Jacob.

Dave - Hulu/ FX

" Hi I'm Dave!" exclaims rapper Lil Dicky as kicks off a new tv comedy series about his launch to superstardom. For fans of FX Atlanta, this is for you. Dave focuses on David Burd on his path to becoming a hip hip superstar, while also dealing with self esteem, mental health issues, and overall just navigating your dreams and real life. For lack of better words Dave is hysterical and filled with tons of laughs. So much so, it's almost easy to miss the lessons hidden in the under line. Not to give too much away, theres an episode in which a major character in Dave's life reveals he has a severe mental illness and expresses a sense of vulnerability that has long been considered taboo in hip hop culture.

Dave is well written and well executed and will leave you with tons of laughs and WTF moments, which at this moment, I think we can all use.

Honorable Mention:

  The Midnight Gospel - Netflix

For those who enjoy the naked truth behind the simulation this stimulating animation is full of deep though provoking conversation accompanied by bright colorful, trippy and sometimes disturbing visuals. However if you're looking for something to visually pleasing and mentally stimulating. This is the one.

And that wraps up my go to list ICYMI. Things are growing out of control out there. Do what you can to stay safe, make your voice heard, wash your hands, and don't forget; BLACK LIVES MATTER
