'Grey's Anatomy' Season 21: 6 Questions We Can't Wait To Get Answered In The Show's Return
The midseason finale of 'Grey's Anatomy' left viewers on the edge of their seats, but we have to wait until March 2025 to get these burning questions answered

You know, the original theme song to the long-running ABC surgeon drama, Grey's Anatomy, really was onto something when it said "nobody knows where they might end up." Viewers saw the season end for its midseason finale on November 21st and as it usually does, we were left with some pretty big questions.
The midseason finale left two characters in potentially lethal danger, we said goodbye to some characters, the relationships of some are in jeopardy, and we are wondering if some romance is in the future for others. We will hopefully get some answers when the show returns on March 6, 2025 but until then... here are the questions we will be pondering until then.
**Warning: This article contains spoilers for season 21 of Grey's Anatomy**

6. Is there a chance that either Levi or Mika return to Grey Sloan?

In the first half of season 21, we have said goodbye to two surgeons - Dr. Levi Schmitt and Dr. Mika Yasuda. While Levi left Grey Sloan to pursue a pediatrics research position in Texas, Mika's exit was far more tragic. After getting into the car accident that killed her sister Chloe, Mika decided that she couldn't continue working at the same hospital her sister died at. She gave it a solid try after recovering and even tried to pursue a relationship with Dr. Jules Millin, but her grief was too great to overcome.

With their exit, there is no doubt openings for more new characters to fill the void, or even for existing characters to become more visible. With that said, both Levi and Mika were fan favorite characters and they both had really good story arcs. Actors Jake Borelli and Midori Francis have both said they'd be open to returning to Grey's Anatomy in the future, but only time will tell. Could Levi and/or Mika ever return to Grey Sloan?
5. Will Owen and Teddy's marriage ever recover?

Continuing in typical fashion, season 21 showed Dr. Owen Hunt and Dr. Teddy Altman for the utter mess they are. Per usual, Owen got way in his feelings after Teddy told him a guest doctor from Seattle Presbyterian, Dr. Cass Beckman (Sophia Bush), kissed her after some drinks. After making Teddy feel guilty for no reason, he managed to have a deeper connection with a childhood friend, Nora, than anyone would like to see. Which... I mean, that is typical Owen so I don't know what we expected.

I think it's pretty obvious to see what they are setting up with Cass and Nora entering the picture. With Teddy's LGBTQ+ past and Owen's unique ability to ruin just about everything, I have no doubt we will see something happen with either Teddy and Cass or Owen and Nora. The question is... can Teddy and Owen's marriage survive any of it?
4. Does Monica like Amelia enough for a relationship?

When we were introduced to the new attending pediatric surgeon, Dr. Monica Beltran, last season, there were definitely some sparks between her and Dr. Amelia Shepherd. However, Monica put a stop to it by telling a very interested Amelia that she was going through a divorce.
Season 21 brought us back to Monica and showed her having a non-committal fling with Amelia's ex-brother in law, Dr. Winston Ndugu, so there is some complication to it all. Fans got pretty excited with the idea of Amelia finally moving on from Kai, but is Monica the right one for Amelia? Is Monica really not interested or is she just waiting for her divorce to be 100% over before pursuing something serious with Amelia?
3. Will Teddy remain the chief of surgery?

As we have seen time and time again on Grey's Anatomy, the chief of surgery position is a stressful gig. You are always on calls, you have emails to read, budgets to balance, schedules to make, and you hardly get to see the inside of an operating room. It's been stressful for everyone who has sat in the chair, but Teddy seems to be having a harder time than she did before. If Teddy exits the position, I have no doubt the revolving door on the chief of surgery's office will see Dr. Richard Webber return. But will Teddy be able to hack it as a long-term chief? Or will her chief duties mixed with her messy personal life crash her chances?
2. Has the damage been permanently done for Meredith and Richard's relationship?

When the season began, we saw Dr. Meredith Grey navigate the cancer diagnosis of Dr. Catherine Fox in private - including away from Catherine's husband, Richard. When Richard found out, he was quick to shame Meredith for keeping the situation private despite privacy being what his wife wanted. After all, we all know how stubborn and pushy Catherine Fox can be. You'd think that Richard would know that by now.

In the preview for the season's return, we see a glimpse of a confrontation between Meredith and Richard over the situation. It appears as though Meredith is defending her duty to maintain patient privacy, where Richard is still making her feel the effects of keeping his wife's diagnosis private. Meredith and Richard have had their ups and downs and they always seem to be able to come back to each other with their sort of "father and daughter" relationship, but will this time be different? Is there a possibility that Richard freezes out Meredith for good? Now that Richard's biological daughter, Dr. Maggie Pierce, has exited the show and Meredith moved to Boston, maybe Richard is ready to just leave all of the drama behind.
1. What will happen to Lucas and Jo?

In classic Grey's Anatomy fashion, the midseason finale ended with a massive cliffhanger - despite how predictable and manufactured it seemed to be. Viewers were left with Dr. Lucas Adams and Dr. Jo Wilson held at gunpoint inside of a convenience store, with the screen going black after Lucas lunged at the gunman. We were left not knowing if Lucas is okay or whether Jo and her unborn babies are okay. In the preview for the midseason return, it appears as if Lucas is the one who took the bullet, but there is no way to really be sure. It also appeared as though Jo was having a pregnancy complication during the robbery, so it's safe to say the status of her pregnancy is in jeopardy.
This is at least the third time the Shepherd family bloodline has been at the mercy of gun violence, with Derek and Amelia watching their father be killed as children (also during a robbery) and with Derek being shot at Grey Sloan during a mass shooting. I highly doubt they would kill off Lucas or Jo, but stranger things have happened.
