'Teen Mom': The Timeline of MTV Stars Catelynn & Tyler Baltierra's Relationship

First appearing on the 2009 inaugural season of MTV's 16 & Pregnant, Catelynn (Lowell) and Tyler Baltierra learned the consequences of teen pregnancy hard way. The couple believed they weren't ready to be parents and chose adoption for their infant daughter, Carly, despite going against both of their parents wishes.

Catelynn and Tyler remained on the network, ultimately transitioning to the shows Teen Mom, Teen Mom OG, and Teen Mom: The Next Chapter. Their journey of adoption to marriage to actually parenting has all been documented on MTV, even including a pit stop on VH1's Couple's Therapy in 2013. Their story has also been deemed one of the most inspirational, yet controversial, stories to come out of MTV's teen pregnancy franchise.

But how did their relationship gone over the years? Let's take a look at the timeline of Catelynn and Tyler's relationship since they became "soulmates" in middle school.

2005 - Catelynn and Tyler Start Dating

While attending school in Algonac, Michigan, the young 7th graders met while in music class. The couple began dating shortly after meeting and unintentionally brought their parents together, as well. Tyler's dad, Butch, and Catelynn's mom, April, fell in love and tied the knot in 2009.

So, technically, Catelynn and Tyler were step-siblings until their parents divorced in 2013. But as they said on their episode of 16 & Pregnant, they were together first.

2009 - Catelynn Gives Birth to First Child and Gives The Baby Up for Adoption

While being filmed by MTV, Catelynn gave birth to her and Tyler's first biological child, Carly, on May 18, 2009. The couple filmed 16 & Pregnant with five other teen mothers but were the only couple to choose adoption. They also remain to be the only couple from the original series to stay together.

Catelynn and Tyler went through an adoption agency and selected their adoptive couple, Brandon and Teresa Davis - a couple from North Carolina. After Catelynn gave birth, she and Tyler handed baby Carly off and began their journey of healing together.

2010 - Tyler Proposes to Catelynn

During the first season of Teen Mom, Tyler makes the big decision to purchase an engagement ring. MTV cameras captured the high-school students together at dinner in January 2010 when Tyler asks Catelynn if she'd marry him. Catelynn says "yes," but it was an answer that hit a lot of bumps in the road.

2010 - Tyler Learns About Catelynn's Infidelity

During a brief breakup, Catelynn visited her father in Florida and had... well, let's say a secret hookup with another boy. Tyler discovers this secret in July 2010 while filming season 2 of Teen Mom. After a brief desire to get proof via text messages that Catelynn wasn't still being unfaithful, Tyler decided to put his trust issues aside and continue on with their engagement.

2013 - Tyler Calls Off Their Engagement

This is where a lot of things got sticky for the couple. While filming VH1's Couple's Therapy in July 2013, Tyler made the decision to call off their engagement. He tried to defend his reason by stating that Catelynn's lack of motivation and codependency made him afraid that marrying her would put him in "a rut forever." Basically, Tyler said that he wanted a wife who would inspire him and that didn't need him 24/7.

Tyler then tried to turn the tables and blame it on himself, stating that he felt like Catelynn was the one who put up with him - not the other way around.

2014 - Tyler Proposes to Catelynn for a Third Time

Around 6 months after calling off their engagement, Tyler proposed to Catelynn once again. As was documented on the MTV special, Being Lowell, Catelynn revealed that Tyler had surprised her with a new engagement ring at Christmas

2015 - Catelynn Gives Birth to Second Child

On January 1, 2015, Catelynn and Tyler welcomed their second biological child, Novalee. The birth of Nova brought up a lot of painful memories regarding their first child, Carly. As documented on Teen Mom OG, Catelynn and Tyler both reminisce about their adoption experience and try to deal with the emotions associated with becoming parents as a couple.

2015 - Catelynn and Tyler Finally Get Married

On August 22, 2015, the MTV stars finally got married at the beautiful Castle Farms in Charlevoix, Michigan. The wedding in its entirety was documented on Teen Mom OG and is considered by fans to be one of the most emotional episodes in the show's history. It was also seen as a long time coming after their introduction to fans.

In attendance were several other Teen Mom stars including Maci McKinney, Amber Portwood, and Kailyn Lowry. Also in attendance was their biological daughter Carly and her adoptive parents, Brandon and Teresa.

2016 - Tyler Opens Up About Postpartum Depression Concerns

After the excitement of the couple's wedding and a new child settled down, Tyler expressed his concerns over his wife's mental health. As fans saw on Teen Mom OG, Tyler began to question why Catelynn seemed to not want to be around their new baby. Tyler also stated that his family was growing concerned about how often baby Nova was in the care of their family members and not her mother.

After a confrontation, Catelynn was officially diagnosed with postpartum depression and she agreed to check into an Arizona treatment facility in March 2016. Catelynn received a lot of support from her husband, as well as fellow Teen Mom stars.

2017 - Catelynn Enters Treatment Again for Depression

In November 2017, Catelynn made the decision to once again go back to a treatment facility for her mental health. This decision supposedly came after feeling pressure to have another child and being afraid she'd experience postpartum depression again.

2018 - Catelynn Returns to Treatment

A very short time after being released from treatment, Catelynn made the decision to turn around and go back in January 2018 - this time citing suicidal ideations. Tyler fully supported Catelynn's decision to take care of her mental health and stated on Instagram that "I know that our love & commitment towards each other will persevere through anything life throws our way."

Tyler also revealed to Teen Mom OG show producer, Kerthy Fix, that Catelynn had been pregnant for a third time, but suffered a rather traumatic miscarriage.

2019 - Catelynn Gives Birth to Third Child

Despite all of the struggles with mental health and a miscarriage, Catelynn welcomed the couple's third child, Vaeda, on February 21, 2019. Calling her their "rainbow baby" on social media, Catelynn expressed that her pregnancy was a shock and happened when the couple had decided to not actively try for another child.

2020 - Financial Troubles Hit the Baltierra Family

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, it was revealed in November 2020 that Catelynn and Tyler owed the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) more than $856,799 in tax debt. The debt was accrued over three years and the couple was hit with federal tax liens for the years 2016-2018, as well as tax liens from the State of Michigan. The couple managed to pay off the liens by late 2023

However, the couple got into more trouble with the IRS in association with their octagon-shaped, $220,000 Michigan home purchased in 2017. The couple decided to take it off the market in September 2024 after failing to sell the house at an inflated price of $449,900. After taking the house off the market, they paid the 2022 tax lien after being threatened with foreclosure of the property if the debt was not paid by March 2025.

2020 - Catelynn Has Another Miscarriage

In December 2020, Catelynn revealed that she was set to announce she was pregnant once again, but she suffered another miscarriage just before Thanksgiving. She stated that her choice to reveal the miscarriage was so other women struggling with the same situation don't feel alone.

2021 - Catelynn Announces She Is Pregnant With Her Last Child

Catelynn announced that she was pregnant with her fourth child in February 2021. The announcement also stated that she and Tyler were hoping for a boy since they'd agreed it would be her final pregnancy, but the gender was revealed to be another girl.

2021 - Catelynn Gives Birth to Fourth Child

On August 28, 2021, the Baltierra's announced that they welcomed their fourth daughter, Rya. Catelynn went on to elaborate that the baby's name was inspired by the Disney film, Raya and the Last Dragon.

2021 - Catelynn and Tyler Reunite With Carly

After nearly two years, Catelynn and Tyler announced they were able to arrange an in-person visit with their first daughter, Carly, in October 2021.. This visit also served as a way to introduce the then 12-year old to her biological sisters, Nova, Vaeda, and Rya. Per the wishes of Carly's adoptive parents, MTV cameras did not film the visit.

The couple would have another visit with Carly in June 2023.

2023 - Tyler Joins OnlyFans

After Catelynn insisted that Tyler would "racking in some dough" if he started an OnlyFans, he actually did it in July 2023. Tyler claimed that despite joining the adult social media app, he was not creating explicit content. He also insisted that Catelynn was the one actually running the account and that fans would not ever see them having sex or see him fully nude.

2024 - Catelynn Claims She's Been "Blocked" By Their Daughter's Adoptive Parents

Catelynn got a bit candid on social media in September 2024 regarding the contact she has with her now 15-year old daughter, Carly, or lack thereof. Catelynn went on several social media rants insisting that Carly's adoptive mother, Teresa, had blocked her number and wasn't sharing the updates she sent with Carly. The social media posts have caused quite a stir on social media with fans arguing on both sides - one side stating Catelynn and Tyler were exploited by the adoption agency, with the other side stating that their expectations of an open adoption were unrealistic.

Tyler has since chimed into the conversation, stating that it "isn't his job" to protect Brandon and Teresa and that he fully supported his wife's exposure of how they've been treated. They also both have claimed that they now feel they won't have the opportunity to talk to or see Carly until she's 18-years old. The lack of communication has continued to be documented on Teen Mom: The Next Chapter, with their daughter Nova now asking why she can't see her sister.

2024 - Catelynn Denies She Chose Tyler Over First Child

Despite archived MTV footage saying otherwise, Catelynn took to social media once again in defense of her rants against her daughter's adoptive parents. Days after Tyler came to her defense regarding the September 2024 social media storm, Catelynn decided she wasn't going to let internet critics have the last word and now it was her turn to defend her husband.

She stated in a TikTok video that she'd been seeing comments that Tyler gave her an ultimatum in 2009 regarding Carly's adoption, and that she'd chosen him over their child. Catelynn claimed those comments were unjust and harmful to her experience as a birth mother, and that she didn't "give her baby away for a man." Despite Tyler stating on several occasions in old MTV footage that if they wouldn't be together if they would have kept the child, Catelynn insists that the adoption wasn't to keep Tyler. She also tried to add on that Tyler wasn't the main one driving adoption... although, again, old footage implies otherwise.
