Mickey 17 was on the must watch list for last year but time got away from me. We are once again playing catch up before awards season, I promise I will start doing these in a timely manner this year! This was a film we knew we wanted to see. Robert Pattinson is actually an incredible actor who sometimes still gets caught up in Twilight discourse in an attempt to discredit his skills. That combined with it being a Bong Joon Ho movie made it highly anticipated.
Dropping us right in the middle of the story is always good. A lot of exposition up top is almost never a good idea. Ew these creatures are super gross.
Feels like a pretty immediate commentary on how the further technology goes the less human we become. In this society people are so desensitized to death. What Mickey is are referred to as “expendables”.
The guy in charge is Mark Ruffalo and they made him look like such a tool and I love it. Mark has slipped into doing some weird roles and I love it. I greatly appreciate it when actors spend their time challenging themselves and creating something unique.
This boy is so oblivious. Nasha is staking her claim because other girls are hitting on him and he doesn’t even know. Why are they like this?
Mickey is a character that gets reprinted every time that he dies. Except one time he gets reprinted and the previous version of him didn’t die. So now there are two of him.
The show poses some quite extensive philosophical questions. The abilities of science vs humanity. How does morality grow with technology? Does morality grow and change with this kind of technology?
Mickey 17 now has to deal with the fact that Mickey 18 is running around with his girlfriend. He got called into Mark Ruffalo’s chambers for a surprise dinner. So both Mickeys are in front of people. This new society is obviously a cult but it's the goofiest fucking cult I’ve ever seen in my life.
Kai was a great audience insert. She calls attention to the cruelty of heartlessness of what Mickey goes through. Part of this cult-like existence is that everyone else on this ship is simply told things that they immediately believe and they don’t think about the moral consequences because they are so deep in the Kool-Aid. But when she is actually confronted with Mickey being shot in the head right in front of her she is forced to feel something.
I love that his girlfriend is unphased. She was so happy to have two of her boyfriend. And she has absolutely been doing drugs.
Kai caught Nasha with both Mickeys and the girls agreed to each take one. Which is crazy. 17 is still a very reserved person, he takes orders, he does what he’s told. Mickey 17 is very concerned with just staying alive. Mickey 18 however is kind of a rage filled asshole.
These creepers have basically surrounded the ship. These creatures that the humans on this ship have also deemed expendable. They have also proved themselves to be non-violent. They saved Mickey 17 when they could have eaten them.
Nasha is a firecracker and I love it. The funniest part about this cult is that the leadership is so fucking stupid that they listen to all of the advisers and scientists and they end up not only taking control of the situation but pushing back against leadership forcing them to suffer consequences to their actions.
Some incredible character development from Mickey 18. He sacrifices himself to save the creepers and the rest of the human colony. This started when he offered himself up instead of Mickey 17.
This film came out too early in the year. We see it every awards season, if the film came out before the summer blockbusters it often gets overlooked come nomination time. Everything released after the summer blockbusters get over nominated because yes, recency bias is a thing among professionals as well. I genuinely think that if this film was released in October it would receive a million nominations. It had incredible moral commentary. Robert Pattinson and Mark Ruffalo were incredible. The film does an incredible job of making sure we know Mickey is the main character but the story wouldn’t happen without Nasha. Even the way that Mickey interacts with her lets us know that she is someone who is meant to be respected. He helps dress her, he supports her, he loves her. I think this movie is really really up there with the best films of the year. We will be giving this a 9/10.
