Co-Written, Illustrated & Lettered by Rob Cannon

A frozen apocalyptic story in the spirit of Mad Max, Fallout, and Borderlands meets Tarantino. It begins with Berny, a psychedelic addict surviving in a glacial wasteland. A fight with brutal gunslingers ensues and crazy hallucinations lead our weird hero on a quest to find the hole of truth... Yeah, a mystic hole that tells the truth. The only thing we can promise is: a lot of death!

I have no idea if anything that they’ve said to describe this book is really true after reading it. I mean it is a post-apocalyptic story and there’s a lot of imagery in the opening with some narration and a tad bit of dialogue, I mean tad bit as in scant, and a whole lot of action. The action feels normal and I have to say that the dude doing all the killing is weird and he’s all geared up, his winter kit, and with some crazy arse strength really does some damage. It isn’t until we actually see him that things become outside the ordinary and that’s being kind, to an extreme of kind.

The way that this is being told is completely and utterly unique. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented extremely well. The character development is beyond mind boggling to me. You have to read it to see what I mean but how we see the dialogue, the narration, the character interaction and how they act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter continue to flesh them out as people. The pacing is really well done and as it takes you through the pages revealing the world, the characters and of course the story.

How we see this being structured is quite interesting and the layers within the story well again uniquely utilised I would say. This is definitely one of those outside the box thinking books and the way that this is being told isn’t something that is easy to describe without giving too much of it away. This is really most assuredly a book you need to read for yourself to fully grasp the ramifications. The way that we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is nicely achieved.

The interiors here are really very, very solid work. The linework is phenomenal and how we see the varying weights being utilised to create the detail work is astonishingly well rendered. Once we get to “This is Berny” I am blown away by the quality of work that we are seeing. The work is phenomenal and the creativity and imagination that we’re seeing is out of this world! Backgrounds are utilised extremely well utilised and how they work within the composition of the panels to bring us depth perception, a sense of scale and that overall sense of size and scope to the story is amazing to see. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling. The colour work is subtle and at times incredibly bold and it seems so right. How we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is handled brilliantly.

I am actually really impressed with this. There are so many aspects that you have to sit back and look at and admire the way this is being told. It is non-traditional and that’s bloody fabulous to see. It has more the feel of the Mad Hatter after his drug fuelled tea party than anything else and the creativity and imagination the user has to use from their own mind and then seeing this kind level engagement is phenomenal. You need to read this and see what the fuss is about but trust me it’ll change how you see comics.
