San Diego Comic Con is a little thin to some eyes this year. The absence of many studios and a majority of Hall H has many attendees selling off their badges to people more motivated by the smaller panels. I personally think it's a great thing, both for SDCC and for the strikers. We want this strike to hurt the industry, that’s the point. That said, now comic con can operate more like an actual convention for industry fans and professionals. And among the things that fans get to enjoy comic con weekend is the beautiful and wonderfully nerdy, Felicia Day.
If you don’t know who Felicia Day is well you are in for a treat and a wealth of nerdy wonderfulness. She is a wonderfully creative, sweet person who makes her passions reality. The first thing of note with her involvement is The Guild. The Guild started as a web series and had 6 seasons with a total of 70 episodes. The series tells the story of a female gamer, and was entirely created and written by Felicia Day. The show ran from 2007-2013 and was based on Day’s World of Warcraft addiction. But she is more than just video game excellence.
The second thing of note in Felicia Day’s bag of tricks is her time on Supernatural. Definitely a show that went on too long but one of its highlights was Felicia Day’s character, Charlie. Written to be a single episode character Charlie was meant to come and go as so many do on shows like Supernatural. But Felicia Day and her character were overwhelmingly loved by fans so we were blessed with her as a returning character. Her character ended up being a ray of sunshine in a very dark (narratively and literally) show. That said her character met a very fridged-like end that literally all of the fans hated, she definitely deserved better. But Felicia Day’s time on the show was definitely a highlight of its run.
Perhaps my favorite entry in her vast creative catalog is Doctor Horrible’s Sing Along Blog. The cult classic web-musical is having its own special screening at SDCC, at least partially in honor of Felicia Day’s presence. The musical also stars Nathan Fillion and Neil Patrick Harris, who are fighting over Felicia Day’s character (because who wouldn’t fight over Felicia Day?). The musical is funny, entertaining and a hilarious addition to nerdom.
The last super notable thing that she has appeared in is Mystery Science Theater. A show that originated in 1988 that now has 13 seasons, and changed networks and production studios multiple times. There has been a film and the popularity of the series has long surpassed cult numbers. Felicia Day appeared as a main character through seasons 11-13, giving her yet another addition to her impressive filmography.
Of course she’s accomplished many other things, appearing as a potential in the 7th season of Buffy, several episodes of Con Man, writing 2 books, and a few comics has certainly cemented her status in nerd culture.
The queen of the nerds would be a bit of an understatement, the beautiful and brilliant Felicia Day has contributed to nerd culture in so many ways. Felicia Day is not only getting her own spotlight on Saturday of SDCC but she will also be on a panel on Friday. SDCC this year is filled with women in comics, women in tv, and women in writing panels so shining a light on a brilliant woman who has dominated all three is only right. I highly recommend checking out everything this woman has ever done, including her wildly entertaining and heartfelt books.
