Good Omens

Season 1

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished 3 years ago 4 min read

Okay so I love Neil Gaimen and Terry Prachet but as the slacker I am I have not seen nor read Good Omens. So in preparation for SDCC and the coming of the second season of the show I decided I should probably catch up. As a huge fan of David Tennant I knew that I was going to enjoy the show but when I say that the show exceeded all expectations, I mean it.

First of all I love that we made God a woman, I also love how comedically specific everything is. When the world was created, exactly. The astrological sign of the earth, when Armageddon would exactly begin. It's highly entertaining.

So basically the premise is that an angel and a demon like humanity and what it produces too much to let the world end so they decide to basically stalk a child and try to influence the innate evil out of him. And they end up stalking the wrong child and don’t find out until literally 5 days before the world ends. First of all I love this premise. I think it's hilarious and genius. I also love the idea that Aziraphale and Crowley have also been vaguely in contact since the beginning of time.

This group of children that's all the antichrist's friends is actually adorable. Are they being influenced by evil or are they just 11?

Damn the dialogue in this show is so good, you can actually tell that the story was written by two different people because of how well Aziraphale and Crowley play off of each other. Their interactions are just too good. And the way the children are written is perfect, this is exactly how 11 year old's interact.

I love that this is also a world with witches and prophecies. No single theology is correct, and there are a lot of elements from different things in this story all with a twist on their original stories. I love the fact that the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse are in this and that war is a woman.

I also love how this show draws attention to how absolutely stupid Christianity is. Like as a whole, the stories in the bible are so stupid. All they do is draw attention to the fact that IF God exists he’s a terrible entity and is in fact not all good, or all knowing. He in fact is either all powerful OR all good, he cannot be both. This is made very clear in episode 3 as we watch Crowley and Aziraphale go through history together.

I’ve come to the conclusion that Crowley and Aziraphale are in love and there is nothing anyone can say to convince me otherwise. They are clearly more than just best friends, they are the most in love motherfuckers I have ever seen on TV.

Heaven and Hell being onto Crowley and Aziraphale’s friendship is going to be a problem for my boys isn't it?

Pollution being like a substitute for pestilence as one of the four horsemen is actually hilarious. It's a good commentary and a little more relevant to modern society (though did this come out long before Covid did).

“We can just run away together” . Nothing about Crowley and Aziraphale is straight, this is the gayest relationship that’s ever been on TV and I could not possibly love it more. Poor Aziraphale realizing that heaven and hell are not at all different is so sad. He looks so disappointed that he knows how to save everyone but no one cares, the angels don’t actually have any interest in stopping the war, just winning it.

The old bookshop burning down is wildly painful to watch. David Tennent screaming “somebody killed my best friend” is so sweet and upsetting. He is just so damn good in this. The look of absolute defeat on his face as he drives away is so heartbreaking. GAY…

The idea that friendship is what battled the anti-christ and their sweet, adorable little friend group is what defeated the four horsemen is so so cute. It’s the classic “love was the answer all along” thing but in a way that isn’t cheesy. It's story points like this that makes the overall story obviously for both children and adults.

Truly a magnificent story and the very obvious love story between Crowley and Aziraphale is my favorite part. They love each other so much and I think a lot of that comes from how the story was originally written. You can very clearly feel the love and friendship and partnership that Neil Gaimen and Terry Pratchet had for each other and it really shines through in the interactions of the two main characters. I truly can not wait to see season 2 (I have advanced screeners so I don’t actually have to wait that long) but I am excited to see where this story goes. And I can’t wait to witness the panel at San Diego comic con and see what the cast thinks about the continuation of this amazing show.
