Emma Watson Returns to Cinema After Academic Break

Harry Potter star Emma Watson is returning to cinemas this year after a break from acting.
The 35-year-old is studying at Oxford University, in the city where she grew up, having opted to study a Master’s degree in creative writing in September 2023.
It was announced last year that Ms Watson had switched to a DPhil while on her acting break, and she previously had studied at two local schools, the Dragon School and Headington School.
The actress is well known for her iconic role as Hermione Granger in all eight of the Harry Potter films, released from 2001 to 2011.
Now, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which gave Ms Watson her breakout role, the film is making a return to the silver screen.
The film will show on screens across the world between Thursday, August 27 and Thursday, September 3, while timings could vary depending on location.
Warner Bros Discovery has promised that “Wizards, Witches and Muggles worldwide can look forward to fan-focused experiences, spectacular screenings, exclusive products, and more.”
An official statement added: "When Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone premiered on November 16, 2001, it opened a Portkey to the wizarding world for filmgoers, shattering Box Office records to become the highest-grossing film of the year."

"That single spell launched an eight-film phenomenon that conjured more than $7.7 billion globally, cementing Harry Potter as one of the most beloved entertainment franchises of all time."
"Now, 25 years later, the magic is stronger than ever, and Harry Potter remains one of pop culture's most enduring icons. Wands at the ready."
Fans of the series have expressed excitement across social media, sharing memories of watching the original films and their favorite characters. Many have praised Emma Watson’s continued dedication to both her academic pursuits and her acting career. The return of the first Harry Potter film to cinemas is expected to attract multiple generations of viewers, from those who grew up with the films to younger audiences discovering the story for the first time.
Emma Watson herself has hinted at her excitement for the film's re-release. In a recent interview, she described revisiting the role of Hermione as a nostalgic journey that reminded her of the bonds formed on set and the magical world that captured the imagination of millions worldwide. While she has focused on her studies in recent years, fans are eager to see how her experiences off-screen will influence future roles.
The anniversary screenings will include special fan events in select cities, with themed merchandise and interactive activities. Warner Bros Discovery has emphasized that the goal is to create a sense of community among fans, celebrating not just the films, but the cultural impact they have had over the last quarter of a century. Collectors and long-time fans can also look forward to limited edition products, including posters, clothing, and other memorabilia tied to the iconic franchise.

In addition to the theatrical re-release, streaming services have seen a surge in interest as fans revisit the Harry Potter films online. Analysts note that the continued popularity of the franchise is a testament to its timeless storytelling, relatable characters, and imaginative world-building. The Wizarding World continues to expand beyond films, with theme parks, books, and spin-offs further keeping the magic alive.
Emma Watson’s career, balancing acting and academic ambitions, has been an inspiration to many young fans who admire her intellect and versatility. By pursuing advanced studies at Oxford, she has shown that actors can successfully combine artistic work with educational pursuits. Her return to the screen, even briefly for this anniversary, reminds audiences of her enduring presence in the entertainment world and her commitment to projects that resonate with her personally.
