Country Comfort - A Netflix Series Review

'Country Comfort' would have been so much better if it knew what it was focusing on.

Music brings people together. Keep moving forward.

Country Comfort aired on Netflix in 2021. Country singer, Bailey, takes a job as a nanny to a family who is still hurting from a loss. As the family comes together forming a new bond, Bailey tries to take back her music career.

Country Comfort would have been so much better if it knew what it was focusing on. The show felt like a rehash of the sitcom, Reba. Musically, it is entertaining, but Country Comfort is repetitive with its message with every episode.

Katherine McPhee was a standout. Her singing voice was lovely. If only she had the chance to perform more. As for her character, McPhee did not have the best direction. Bailey constantly does the wrong thing, either getting herself in trouble, or members of the family in danger. Her character could have been better.

Starring in the roles of the family, Eddie Cibrian, Ricardo Hurtado, Jamie Martin Mann, Griffin McIntyre, Shiloh Verrico, and Pyper Braun were great. Verrico was my favorite of the cast, but then she was pushed aside. Beau (Cibrian) could have had better development if he was more involved with his kids than his own love story.

There should have been fewer characters. For example, the two older brothers (Hurtado and Mann) felt like the same character. Eventually, they stole focus from Bailey, the true main character of the show, in this cringe love triangle.

The family established their dynamic in the first episode, which I liked. That’s what drew me into watching it. Was this series supposed to be about building a music career, reestablishing broken pasts, or awkward teenage love stories which we have seen in countless media through time?

Summer (Janet Varney) was a bland character. She reminded me of Barbara Jean from Reba - except with zero personality and exuberance. I did not feel any chemistry between Summer and Beau.

The love stories could have had a better approach. Why the show had to include Boone (Eric Balfour), I’m not sure. His inclusion messed up Bailey’s character.

There were elements of the series that I liked - don’t get me wrong. I really believe that Country Comfort could have been a better series if it had better execution. It had so much potential if it focused solely on the music angle which feels non-existent in some episodes.

Writers should have spent more time working on the dialogue. And the accents. The accents sound incredibly fake. At times, the cast talked so loudly. Was that necessary? Their actions were so bland at times that it felt like they were reading from cue cards.

Musically, Country Comfort showcases the cast’s talent. The singing and concerts were the best part. For viewers who want to have a music career, the series reflects how to follow your dreams. I love when the media spends time doing that. It felt like the writers got bored of that and decided to showcase what it is like to be a nanny.

Why didn’t Country Comfort include more of the music world? That was its downfall. If you are making a series about music, then stick with that premise. Bailey should have been the main focus instead of putting in unnecessary teenage drama.

Caryn Lucus pitched a great idea, but it was too reminiscent of sitcoms Full House and Reba. Lucus could have focused more on the family, and should have only included the important members.

Country Comfort is a fun series for the whole family to enjoy. If you want to take a look at it, find the series on Netflix.
